Poor SSD Performance

As said...this was my first SSD. I know my PC/Board/Drivers can handle it. It did show flashes of brilliance...here and there. It should do everything better, period.

As said, on that benchmark stew2 posted, my drive got stuck on 4k write and it fluttered at 1.0 to .50 MB/s.
I knew something was wrong. It stayed there for over 5 minutes...and I stopped the test.

I'm looking at both the Intel M series and the Vertex 2 series.
But I think I'm going to wait until the next Gen come out, especially if they're going to be faster and cheaper.

I currently have an Asus P5KPL-CM, latest BIOS, chipset drivers, etc. Radeon HD4300 series (not a gamer, just wanted a good desktop graphics card with it's own RAM), Intel Q8300 quad core @ 2.5GHz and 4 GB (2 x 2GB) crucial RAM running 7 pro 64 bit.

I know by no means is this a top of the line rocket...but it works just fine for what I need and it is a great replacement for my old A7N8X deluxe/Barton core setup that lasted over 6 years....

Thanks for all the help. Any other ideas, please...you're not hijacking, I'm learning and I appreciate it.
Keep the info coming!

Both the Intel M series and the Vertex 2 series are good SSDs, the Vertex 2 gets better benchmarks in the AnandTech site, so we know it is a good performer.

If you can wait for a while the new SSDs that are coming should be much better performers for less cost.

Yes that is the Gen2, Micro Center - Intel X25-M 160GB SATA (3.0Gb/s) 2.5" Solid State Drive - Gen2 524496

I would go for the 80GB, unless you really need the space.
You should store all your data, music, vids, personal files and folders, on a spinner.
Just put OS and apps on the SSD.

That is exactly how I'm going to set it up. That store (15 minutes from me) only has the 160GB listed.
80 GB is more than enough space.

My vendor that just sent me the Imation carries the Vertex 2 and he's trying to match NewEgg's price for me.
If so...we got a winner!!

They are matching the price AND are sending me one to demo.
My sales rep is cool...he said he's been thinking about trying one for his laptop...so I gave him a little low down on them.
End of this week I'll have the Vertex 2. Now I have high expectations!!

Uh...yeah.
Either that Imation drive was bad...or it's specs on paper are worthless.
This OCZ Vertex is what I was expecting...and I haven't really tweaked 7 yet. I'm still installing my programs.

I got a little hasty and thought it locked up...so I powered down. Mistake, ended up having to reset BIOS, reset the drive and finally get it to install.

Big difference...this is what I was expecting.

I use the SSD Agility 2 . Lightening fast reboots, apps open much faster and it's nice not havng to defrag an SSD.

I would say overall performance of my machine has been enhanced in speed and crisp response by 25%.

SSD's rule!

Mine is 60 GB which is all I need for the C: Drive. I use a 750 MB HDD internal for storage and system backups.

here's a general tip:

leave your system at the log-in screen for a couple of hours..
this will allow the OS time to do the full SSD clean-up routine..

- makes quite a difference..!!

oh yes, and move your MyDocs/Libraries, etc onto a storage HD
stops them from taking up valuable SSD space.. :geek:
