Pop Up Icons

Hi,

I notice that a strange icon pops up on my task bar occasionally and I am concerned on the nature of the program that is running at the back end. Does someone know what this icon is and what program in running at the backend?

[1]Have you installed any new hardware, software or updatesprior to this happening?
[2] If you right-click it and select Properties, does it show you the location in the General tab?
[3] What does it say when you hover the mouse pointer over it?

Hi,

Thanks for your response. The problem is that the icon appears only for several seconds and it appears only once in a week or two. To capture this screenshot is itself a challenge. So it is difficult to do any of the steps that you have recommended. I have not install any new software but there's always update of the Microsoft OS.

Have a look in Programs and Features, it might show up in there, look for the icon. Also, sort by date, it sounds like it is a fairly recent addition!

I found this little program-

Task manager, Windows task manager, task manager processes, startup manager

which shows the respective icon for services, applications, and processes.

Might give it a shot.

The icon looks identical to the one used by Logitech with it's Logitech Unifying receiver software, which allows you to use multiple Mice/Trackballs Etc on Multiple devices, it normally runs as a hidden Item, but may appear for a short period when it checks for updates ETC, it shows in the normal windows Task Manager



If you have recently added a Logitech Wireless High end Mouse / Keyboard or other controller to your system, then this is perfectly acceptable, if you have used a Logitech device for a long time it may be that it's just become a bit more noticable, (similar to the old issue - You never see a fault with something in the real world until you notice it once and then you see it every time you're near the item).

If you do not and have never used any Logitech devices then I could be that some other process uses a very similar icon, or it could be something more malicious and I would suggest a malware scan is a good idea

By the way, if you need tools to investigate these type of anomalies, you cannot find a better source than Microsoft themselves - their Sysinternals Suite contains everything you will ever need (and a few that I in forty years of Microsoft support have not yet got round to). The main ones to look at are Autoruns that shows Every item that boots with windows, and Process Manager / Process Monitor that allow you to see exactly what is going on "Under The Hood". All the tools are fully documented in the link I gave
