Another major function setting that applies to POP3 accounts that is not as important with IMAP is "leave a copy of mail on the server" (or similar).

Unless you are in some sort of logged system you can ignore this setting for IMAP and leave it off

If you are using only one system you can also do the same with POP3.

In a case where you have a main system at home and a mobile device, (laptop), which are both using POP3 then I advise the following ...

Set the "leave a copy of mail on the server"to "on" on the laptop and set it to "Off" on the home system, this will mean that if you are away from home you can work on your email in TB but no deletions will take place until they are actioned on the Home system (built in backup). The system may be expanded for multiple devices but should only ever have one "Home" device that has the setting such that things are actually changed on the server

Hi Nigel, This is how my Gmail is set up.



I used to use Windows Live Mail for various other mail accounts, so I signed-in to WLM with a Microsoft Live ID. WLM was installed on both my computers till MS moved the goalposts, which is why I now use TB portable.

WLM had 'Safe' & 'Blocked' senders lists. AS time went on, I mainly only used Gmail & AOL.
Now Gmail checks my AOL account for me using POP3, so I only use Gmail in TB.
The reason I am using the portable version is:- I can move the folder on one pc to my usb then transfer it to the other after making changes on one pc so both are exactly the same.

I don't click on any link in an email except from this forum & 1 more.

Do you have an always on broadband with a reasonable limit or unlimited contract.

If so I would recommend seriously to switch to IMAP on both systems as this would completely eliminate the need for you to run the portable and manually synchronise the two systems. the method I outlined above could also work for you but if you are using the systems equally then that is always going to be prone to error (but as long as you are happy it does work that's for you to decide )

I have a Netgear router that is never switched off. My ISP is TalkTalk which is unlimited download and to cap it all FREE except line rental & £10 per month. If I'm not using any of my pc's they get shutdown.

How's this for highspeed broadband, fibre optic is available but I don't need it.

As you have unlimited access to the net I would seriously suggest that you switch to IMAP, this would mean that anything you did on one system would be immediately mirrored on the other system. and no need fro you to copy anything over "sneaker Net" (USB stick)

Hi Nigel, if I was young again, I'd rather have toothache than use IMAP. I know I can safely delete anything on either pc as the master copy is still on Gmail. I also only get an email once on either pc so I don't have to remember if it has been dealt with.
