Portable Work Environment

Hi,
what is the "best" solution for a "portable" win7 work environment?

problem:
i need to do some work on my home and my office pc and use of some professional highend graphics applications (not just checking emails or transferring docs)

- I guess using a VM would probably be a problem because of the GPU
- some time ago i read about some remote access solutions... are those usable in a way so that it really feels like you are on the remote machine or is there still a bad lag and other issues involved?
- is there already a REAL portable solution available? for example installing everything on a fast portable drive and boot directly from this drive on different hardware?
- any other ideas?

thanks for any suggestions.... and like i mentioned before, the challange is that i need to use some highend applications and do fast and precise mouse movements. so if it's a remote solution it's got to be very accurate.

Have a look at Team Viewer. I use it on Video Editing HD videos but you probably mean higher end than that. I find the mouse to be as fast and as accurate when remote working as normal working. The program is free for personal use. You need a licence for commercial use but I think the definition of "commercial use" is when you give remote support to others for a fee!

A good laptop you be your best bet, or a portable external drive if you are allowed to transport the files that way (you can now get external SSD's which would be extremely fast)....then you have local access from both machines on the same files.

VM would work but graphics would be an issue for you as you stated.

Remote access tools do not give you the sitting at the pc experience that you are saying that you need because of quick accurate mouse control (still lag issues existing in every remote desktop app that I have ever used, but I am far from an industry expert on remote desktop apps).

I have no lag at all when usingTeam Viewer as I said above;

Bobtran: a laptop is unfortunately not an option at this time.

Mitchell65: I've heard of Teamviewer before.... don't i need to give permission on the remote machine when accessing it from somewhere else? ...meaning, i thought the person on the remotemachine has to manually allow the connection, which in my case wouldn't work since I can be only at one place at a time.

My favourite solution would still be an external drive which i can boot from on different hardware profiles.... I thought by now something like that must be out there somewhere? ; )

Yes you need to give permission so it would not suit here, sorry misunderstood the problem!

Yes you need to give permission so it would not suit here, sorry misunderstood the problem!

That's quite true but you need to open the TeamViewer program to establish a connection and you can't do that remotely. I suppose you could leave TeamViewer open in the background but that would then mean setting the program to open on boot up of the remote machine.

You would need Team Viewer Portable to run from a USB stick (Team Viewer Full Version for a desktop) plus Team Viewer Host for your server it can be run as a windows service.(All free!!) Here's a link:-
