Nothing, nothing at all. I have never had any trouble at all this way. I am the safest surfer around, no file sharing of any type, yadda yadda. Anyway, with me, wife and daughter using it we have still never had any trouble. One day it'll bite me I suppose, but until then I like not having the overhead of stupid security programs.

Then I work on peoples computers that have gotten viruses within hours of opening the box! Sigh. I really do not know what people do to get them so often.

My favorites for others to use are Malwarebytes, Spyware Doctor, and Norton 2010 for AV (I know, amazing, but the new Norton products are really good, at least the Av is! I loose cool points for liking it, but it is really light and works well now) Kaspersky if I could only have a single program for everything.

Do you guys find that you actually have virus problems which require using 2 anti-virus apps side by side? I've rarely ever gotten anything whatsoever in my years of using computers personally and supporting them professionally.

Peace of mind is all I can say. I never used anti-virus regularly until Tuesday when I decided to keep MSE installed and going. All these people with their external firewalls, double anti-virus, double spyware, and other security products is really overkill. I haven't had a virus in 9 years and the reason I gt one then was because I was 11 and didn't know any better.

so very true.

alas, most of us are human, and as such are all too fallible, and sometimes click on stupid things when intoxicated or just plain tired, or not concentrating.

so it's a good idea to have good av as backup.

i use and really like kis 2010, and i get it free from my bank - hoorah! :D

Unfortunately, so few people seem to be have enough common sense when it comes to computers. Of course, there is a correlation to between these types of problems and the people who opt to not pay for their OS's and software and visit nefarious websites to download their warez thinking that everything is just fine and they have never had a problem.

Many adult websites are the exact same way. While many think they just stumbled onto a cool site offering free pics...they don't actually realize the things going on in the background.

Using something like Web of Trust (search for WoT) or one of the other add-ins that rate sites at a bare minimum is a good idea.

There are a lot of sites out there that look innocent enough but are really adware/malware traps (animated screensavers anyone?)

Tests over the last few years have shown that the average time an unprotected, fresh computer can expect to live once connected to the Internet has dropped to around 5 minutes.

No protection at all is, IMHO, foolish. At least a router that does SOME filtering is a necessity these days.

A router, a good firewall, and an antivirus of some sort will not slow things down that much, certainly not as much as trying to clean up your system after it has become part of a botnet or infected with keyloggers, etc. etc.

I do around once every month or two - been clean every time. I'm checking from a PE boot disk too so I know it is accurate. I am a computer technician and I remove viruses almost every day on other computers, but I have NEVER been infected myself. Been using PCs since Tandy TRS 80 days, I ran Vista with UAC off with never a single problem. Really, it is hard to get infected doing basic tasks. It is also really easy to get infected doing the wrong tasks - If I want to be infected I can be within minutes though I have no desire to do so! Windows 7 UAC is better so I'm leaving it on for now.

Windows Police Pro, or antivirus 2009 variants are everywhere as I see them daily. I still do not know where or how people get these so quick.
