PowerPoint File Size Too Large!

This is driving me NUTS! I've been grappling with this problem for days! I am running Office 2010 on Windows 7 64-bit. I just created my first PowerPoint presentation containing 30 slides, all containing images, with a total of 35 images overall. All of the images together add up to less than 6 MB. During the creation of the slides I was careful to follow the guidelines for Sizing Digital Images For Powerpoint.

However, when I save the presentation to disk, it is over 55 MB! I have tried to Compress Pictures from the Format toolbar-- no effect. In fact, file size of the presentation was larger after this. If I go to File>Info>Optimize Media Compatibility, this option is GRAYED OUT and does not work! I want to be able to send this presentation as an email attachment, but 55MB is way too big!

What the heck is going on here? How can I fix this???

Thanks for any and all advice.

are you saving just the presentation itself - or the full working powerpoint file?

Zipping the pps file only changes the file size from 54 MB to 51 MB-- still too big to email. I really don't understand why the pps or even the ppt file is so HUGE. Like I stated earlier, all of the images combined only total less than 6 MB. Where is all the extra crap coming from???

2. How to Compress Pictures in PowerPoint:
If you have any pictures in your PowerPoint presentation, then you can optimize the size by compressing pictures.
Step 1 - Click on the picture to bring up the Picture toolbar
Step 2- Click the compress picture button
Step 3 - On the Compress Pictures menu:
• Apply to: All pictures in document
• Change resolution: Web/Screen
• Options: Compress pictures and Delete cropped areas of pictures
• Click OK
When the command finishes, you can save the file at a fraction of it’s prior size. In this case we had 100+ maps in a 70 Meg file. After the Compress Picture command finished, the file was only 12 Meg.

It doesn't seem to matter. Both the .ppt and .pps files are the same size-- 54 MB.

Did you do the actions in the second illustration below?

Compress Pictures To Reduce File Size Of PowerPoint 2010

You often need to compress PowerPoint presentations when sharing it via email. If your presentation is full of images, you can try compressing these images to reduce the overall size of the presentation.

Once the picture is inserted in the Presentation then click the Compress Pictures option under Format > Picture Tools.

Now be sure to check the Delete cropped areas of pictures option to reduce the overall size of the presentation. Also select the appropriate target output.

Click OK to complete the configuration.

BREAKTHROUGH! I finally found my answer here: Reduce the size of your PowerPoint files under the heading: Beware the mysterious, unseen element. As it turns out, there was a hidden text box on one of my slides that had no text in it. Why an empty text box would cause the PowerPoint presentation file size to grow so large is beyond me. But when I deleted it, my .ppt file shrunk from 54 MB to 2.8 MB! Amazing.

Thanks to all who responded!

Best Regards!
