Powerpoint very slow screen updates

I've installed my copy of Office XP (which works perfectly well for my purposes and I don't need any new features of later versions!), and Powerpoint 2002 runs very slowly re-drawing the screen. After selecting a "Slide design" from the view menu, it takes a two or three seconds to redraw the background if I switch between slides, type some text in a text box over the background, resize the window etc. (No delays when switching slides during a slide show though.)

It works very fast on my old laptop running XP. My Windows 7 desktop computer is a Core Duo E7400 with a GTX260 graphics card (latest drivers installed) so should be about 10x faster than the laptop!

Any ideas why this might be?

I have this exact same problem. Powerpoint 2002 worked perfectly well when I had Vista installed on my computer. When I changed the operating system to Windows 7 Premimum 64 bit, PowerPoint is extremely slow re-drawing the screen.

Does anyone have any idea?

This thread is probably long dead by now, but I had the same problem and couldn't find a solution anywhere else. I figured it out so I'll post anyway for anyone in the future. The problem seems to go away when Aero is disabled. Right click on the PowerPoint shortcut, click properties, and then under the compatibility tab check off "Disable Desktop Composition". It worked for me.

qwerty 15, thank you for your response. I must have a different version of Windows or PowerPoint because when I clicked on the ppt alias, I didn't have the options you mentions. But… I had an option in the General tab "For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this file". I unchecked it and PowerPoint immediately reverted to blazing speed.

I had recently converted from VMWare Fusion on my Mac to Parallels Desktop, and while everything else seemed to run fine, PowerPoint was impossibly SLOW. This fixed the problem. Thanks so much for your help.
