Black screen, no cursor, no beep.

Hi,
My laptop was booting up very slowly for a while. Since last week the screen remains black, no cursor.
Instructions online say to continuously press F8 after hitting start to bring up the boot menu, this doesn't work. I tried this with every key from F1-12. Also it does not produce a beep sound.
The only things which happen are the power button lights up after pressing it and the fans start blowing after 2-3 mins.
I read that I will need a boot DVD, my question is: Will I have to select a setting to boot from this dvd? How will I do that when the screen is completely black?

Thank you.

It can be a bad contact between memory and slot or it also can be that your laptop is dead.
Do you live nearby the sea?

Shutdown, remove the charger and the battery. Open the memory cover, remove the memories sticks and spray a contact cleaner on the memory and on the slots. Insert only one memory stick. Insert the charger and the battery and try to boot.

Thanks for the reply Megahertz.

I live about 60kms from the sea, not super close.

I'll go look for some contanct spray tomorrow when stores are open, are there types I need to avoid? Some people warn against this. Is electric contact cleaner to clean dust inside computer safe to use? : buildapc

The ram sticks are working, I am using them currently in a different laptop.

Sorry for the delay. I got the WD-40 specialist contact spray yesterday and followed your steps. Unfortunately no change of result. A light on the power button, a small one time sound from the cd slot and fans which start spinning after 2-3 mins.

The ram and hd works, do you think the motherboard itself is dead? Is there anything else I can do to troubleshoot?

I had a bad experience with this laptop manufacturer (the ones who put it together to my specs), within the first year the laptop went back 4 times due to bad constuction. After this I stopped moving the laptop around and it remained in good shape. On one end I am hesitant to put any more money into this machine, on the other hand it did work fine just a few weeks ago so if it's a small thing the cost would be worth it. The laptop is about 6 years old.

It can be so many things. Normally on laptops the almost everything is integrated on the MB, even the CPU is soldered to the MB.

I had a Sony Vaio that had a problem on the internal PS. The PS couldn't charge the battery.
Also seen a Dell that had oxidation on the MB due to use nearby the sea. I bought a new MB on eBay and used all the other laptop components.

As BTO just assembled using OEM parts, you may find a new MB for sale
