Pre-Beta > Beta Question

So let me get this straight. Right now I am running on the Pre-Beta Build 6956 with the 30 day activation. I was told I wouldn't have to worry about fixing the activation because the true Beta would be out within the next month. So my question is; Will I have to reformat and fresh install with a new DVD in order to use the new full beta, or can I update through my current build? I don't wanna waste a billion DVD's just to keep up with the builds.

Hi Mike,

Yes, unfortunately you will need to create a new installation DVD for any new version released. With these pre-beta and beta versions, it is best to do a clean install with them to avoid problems during and after the installation.

Thanks for the reply Brink. Will this change once we get into the full Beta stage? Because the Pre-Beta isn't really made to be updated, because its made for demonstration use. Where as the full Beta could be made to update so beta tester's don't have a hard time. You know what I mean?

I would doubt that the upgrade option would be viable until it is released as a later Release Candidate or retail version.

The recommendation is to do a fresh install every time, but you can (and many people do) an upgrade from version to version. But regardless of version, you'll always need to burn a new DVD for every upgrade/fresh install. And you don't need to worry about wasting a billion DVD's, I think you should only expect 2 or 3 more builds

While Brinks advice is indeed the best. (pre-releases are bad enough as fresh installs!)

Vista Ultimate x64 updated fine to Win 7 Ultimate x64 build 6801 and then updated AGAIN fine to build Win 7 build 6936 x64.

Obviously Brink is also right in the fact that this could change though.
