Hi all,

sorry if I post my question in incorrect place, I thought that is a problem with VMWare Workstation program.
I have a HP Pavilion with windows 7 home edition 64x.
By VMWare Workstation I installed XP.
after about 3 months, now I have a problem by this virtual XP.
USB drivers didn't work on XP with this error:

A supported host USB driver was not found. If you have installed USB traffic monitoring software on the host system, please remove it.

Can any one help me?
Thanks & best regards,

Nima

Hi Nima,
I was getting to ready to start a general discussion about running VMware workstation on Windows 7 when I discovered your post. I have been running workstation 7.1 (XP guest like you) on an HP pavilion dv6 for several months.

I can try to help. Let me ask some questions. First, did you recently install any new software on the Windows 7 host that might connect a USB device? I ask because there is a discussion on VMware communities forum about Sony Ericsson mobile phones producing this problem. The posted solution, which did not work for all users, was to roll back the USB device driver in the host to that from microsoft and not a third party provider. Second, what was the full error message? Did it say USB controller initialization failed? Third, can you still use USB devices in host? I would check the device manager for problems with USB controllers in the host and the XP guest.

Dear benjis78

thanks a lot for your reply.

Answers of your questions:

1- Yes, I connected a Sony Ericsson mobile phone.
I found too that problem might be accord by Sony Ericsson mobile phones when connect to pc and update USB driver.
I rolled back USB driver to the last version, but problem didn't solve.

2-Full error hasn't "USB controller initialization failed".

3- Yes, I can use.

Nima,
Here is the VMware knowledge base entry for this problem:
VMware KB: A USB device does not function in the virtual machine

Try performing the instructions on steps 1 - 6 and post your results here.

Regards,
benjis78

I did this instructions before, but had not successful result.
In my searches, I found AMD USB Audio Filter Driver might cause this problem. This is a driver on HP laptops (or desktops). many people that had HP, could solve their problem by removing this driver.
This blog.

But I couldn't find it in my laptop.
Unfortunately I had no time to wait to detect problem. because I needed work with XP on VMWare and needed USB Drivers on it,finally I forced install a fresh Windows 7.

In my searches, I saw from 2008 until now, very people had my problem, but not found a clear-cut solution for it. I hope be find cause of this problem soon.

Thanks again benjis78 for your help.

Best regards,
Nima

I just had a same problem : i cannot get my vmware wkstation v7.1.1 / v7.1.2 USB to work, so reverting to v6.5.4 but also having problem with USB (but differently)

Managed to solve it : remove all Sony Ericsson Software.
Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Removed a "Sony Ericsson..??"
Then right click EVERY item, > properties > Driver TAB > Digital Signer =?
= Microsoft Windows = OK
= Sony Ericsson = Click on "Roll Back Driver"
Check on each item, I found most had to be changed in the "USB Root Hub"

Afterthat, and without re-booting, run vmware and it works, even asking me about mass storage drivers for the USB... :)

Good Luck!

(I might try the v7 again!)
