Problem Installing SP1 - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Hi guys, sorry for the delay getting back to you. I'm at my girlfriends for the weekend. I did try a few updates before I left, and it seemed about 70% were successfully installed, while a few have been troublesome and I had to rerun the fix tool inbetween updates. I ran the SFC and i think it came back clear "no violations were found". I noticed that IE 9 did not want to install as I tried it a few times but IE was still showing as version 8. I've also had an issue with the nvidia kernel driver crashing and successfully restoring? Could they be related?

Are you saying you are using I.E.8.

Take a look back at post #20

Yes, the current version installed is IE 8 which is strange because I thought IE 9 would have been included in the SP1 update automatically?

I followed the instructions at #20 yesterday morning and still received errors

IE upgrades are not included in Service Packs - ever :)

We need the requested logs from those instructions - without them we're just guessing.

The CBS log is only one of the files we need.
It indicated that the CheckSUR had work to do - but we also need the other files to confirm what was fixed, and what remains to be done.

Hi Noel,

My apologies, I read the instructions wrong. I thought you needed the CBS log, not the entire folder...

Please find the complete CBS folder attached. Please note that due to the files size i have had to zip the CBS log separately to the other CheckSUR logs. I've also attached a screen shot of my current I.E 8 which ive been trying to upgrade to I.E 9/10, and also some error messages

The CheckSUR is clear - surprisingly, considering the errors in the CBS.logs!
You have a number of registry bitflips - 113 of them, that I've found.
I can try resolving these manually, but it will take some time, and effort on both our parts - or you can attempt a repair install and hope that it cures most, if not all of them.

If you want to go ahead and try fixing this manually, please copy the C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop, then compress the copy, and upload it to your SkyDrive or other favoured fileshare site, and post a link.
I'll take a look, and see what I can do with it.

Thank you for taking the time to review the logs, its much appreciated.

Would you mind if i ask what "registry bitflips" are, I'm just curious. I'll try the repair install first since its a clean install anyway so i have nothing to lose, and hopefully it'll save us both some time. Is there any particular way i should carry out the repairs?

Any ideas what would cause such errors on a fresh install?

I have just run the repair install twice and it failed both times saying that "setup can't continue" (see attachment) once it started transferring files, settings & program's. I tried both my normal user account and also the hidden admin account, but both failed with the same error.

I have just rerun the SFC and it found errors, with some that it couldn't fix. I restarted my computer rerun SFC which then found "no violations".

I then tried to install IE10 which I believe completed successfully but when the installer tried to restart IE I received the attached error message. I restarted my computer again and everything seemed normal until I started IE10 and received the following error "the program can't start because api-ms-win-downlevel-advapi32-l1-1-0.dll is missing" I've also received several different variants of a similar error message relating to "api-ms-win-downlevel"

Any suggestions before I throw it out of the window? lol

Hmmm - unusual to fail at that point :(

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

post the log from the Event Viewer - it'll be from Wininit source

Hi Noel,

I just tried running the CHKDSK and it's saying "The type of file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive". Shall I still proceed even though the drive cannot be locked?

Cheers,

I've just completed the CHKDSK, but when I try to access the event viewer I receive the following error "not enough storage is available to complete this operation" even though I've only used 36.5GB of 297GB?

I had to do a system restore as the IE10 update caused to many "api-ms-win-downlevel" errors about missing DLL's and everything grinded to a halt. I reran the CHKDSK and ive attached to log.

The good news is that the drive seems to be still healthy :)

The indexes look as if they were slightly corrupted, which can lead to the sort of problems you were experiencing.

Please run another SFC /SCANNOW and post the new CBS.log file

Hi Noel,

Yes, I would have been very surprised if the log had suggested otherwise as I've run several disk checks and they all came back clear, so i guess at least we can eliminate that?

The IE10 update caused loads of errors and I was forced to restore the system to an earlier date. I've run several SFC today most of which found errors that it was unable to repair. I also tend to receive the message "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation" quite often. Is this normal?

I've just completed another full reinstall and I'm running a SFC before doing anything else. I'll post the log once I have it, but this is a 100% clean install without even running windows update.
