Okay I'm kind of upset and scared.

Yeah

Okay my computer just somehow and suddenly.. got a black screen (browsing and watching videos and speaking and stuff)

It then a few seconds later the boot up screen showed up and I went into booting, logging in.

I did get the Windows Error Screen. I have done the normal thing.

It has just happened today, twice. Just a few minutes after each other.

This is a netbook and has Intel Atom and 1gb ram. Windows 7 Starter.

Help.

I don't know where to put this thread so I am sorry.

This is vague but their isn't much info at all on this.

Also I am a child. And do not want anything major happen.

Also I have recently been having problems with my Logitech Mouse. It has the malfunctioning bubble that Windows: Usb device has malfunctioned.

.. The Mouse is a little troublesume as I can't figure out how to fix it.

How long have you had this notebook? If it's still under warranty I would have it checked out professionally. You can try starting up in safe mode and check if it's still acting the same way. While in safe mode make sure you have all the latest MS updates and all current driver updates. My suspicion is that you have some sort of virus, malware embedded on your system. While in safe mode update and run your Anti-Virus and malware software.

I'v had the netbook a little while.. I'd say since chrismas..

Also the only "antivirus stuff" I have is Microsoft Security Essentials. Is that okay? Also is it okay just to scan in normal mode and is Safe Mode.. okay? (Never used it so I have no idea)

edit: Scanned in normal mode.. nothing.

In fact.. I think it's something to do with my usb mouse.. as it seems to only cause problems plugged in.

Also.. I usually have

Internet Explorer - Games tab open

Google Chrome - A forum, and youtube - two tabs and another kind of small information tab

And Windows Live Messanger - Talking to one person.

Right now I have ie with two tabs and no crashing so it's either running the video is taking it's toll or the usb mouse. .-

Seavixen: Your article.. Isn't going to help me.. I don't have a windows boot dvd nor do I have a disk drive as it is a netbook. And if it's my usbs messed up. I don't really know what I would do. So. .-.

edit: Sorry if that sounded rude.. also the 2nd one I have looked at and hasn't proved related to my situation. Sorry.

It's been about 20 minutes since the last black screen - reboot. I'm still not sure. I am wondering whether to start up my windows live messanger thing. Then my google chrome thing. If it's okay after 10 minutes.. then maybe I'll plug in my mouse to test it.

Okay plugged in mouse, for a few minutes.. it's good but not working. Usb has malfunctioned.

edit: computer is getting slightly warmer. I am wondering whether it was an overload of sorts between mouse and cpu.. overheating from the videos. Considering this is just a netbook with a gig of ram.

But still I'v been able to run multiple things.. like minecraft on the tiny view setting. >.> While also having google chrome with videos, and forums.

Also ie with the games.

So I am trying to understand this.. is it windows live messanger?

edit edit: Mouse is working... let us see.

edit x 3: After a few minutes.. it seems as if.. all is okay.

Does chrome have the power to cause black screens and reboot or is it windows live or is it just youtube?

That's OK, no offence taken as I should have noticed in your original post.

My gut feeling now is that you trying to do too much all at once.

A netbook is not meant for intensive tasking in the manner of a performance laptop or a desktop and I think you're just overloading it.

Cut down on your multi-tasking and if you're into gaming you really need a more powerful computer than a netbook.

I know.. .-. It's just.. well my parents wouldn't exactly allow me. As I actually said a netbook would be okay without fully thinking. I mean the last desktop/actual mine thing, I kind of cause to unlimited reboot. >.> Nothing seems to fix it now so yeah.

I'll just cut down a little.

I'm still not sure whether this is a problem with my mouse or what. Still, I need to go. Tomorrow is a new day and I will see in the morning if that day will be good for my netbook or not.

Thanks for your help tonight..

I hope I do figure out all these problems.

SinRival,

Your netbook getting warmer while playing games is normal, as long as normal doesn't mean hot.

An easy simple program to install, which will also allow you to see and check on your temps is Speccy (link in my sig). Speccy is free.

I just yesterday replaced my mouse.

My life is immeasurable better.

I had a cheap mouse. False economy.

I now have an HP laser usb mouse.

If possible, at least try using another mouse and see how things are.

MSE is an excellent anti-virus. Wise choice.

With 1 GB of ram and an Atom processor don't expect much from your netbook.

I also have a netbook with an Atom processor. The one improvement which I made was to increase the ram from the default 1 GB to 2 GB.

If you can increase your ram to 2 GB you will notice a performance increase.

Now let's see what we can do about your crashes.

I'm trying to determine if you are getting true "blue screens of death".

The BSOD (blue screen of death) does not mean that the screen always turns blue.

Could you check in c:\windows\minidump to see if there are any files there and the date of the file?

If your system crashes, then normally, but not always, a minidump.dmp file will be created.

If you have a recent occurrence of a minidump file, then let me suggest that you go to the Crashes and Debugging forum. Read their posting instructions there. Those people are very helpful and very talented. They will be able to help you with the info that you will provide when you follow the posting instructions there.

Okay thanks,

I'v heard that some netbooks it's not possible to upgrade to 2gb of ram, I have been wanting to do that upgrade and I am probably going to try and discuss this or just go ahead and get it done (I have the money :p)

Also that's the only mouse that we have that's working as a wireless - dongle mouse didn't work at all and my little usb mini netbook mouse also broke and I can't get anything out of that.. it is meant to light up in different colours but it doesn't light up at all.

I will check about the minidump's once I'm back on my netbook, as right now I'm on probably the laptop worser than my netbook even though it's 3gb of ram but of course it's Windows Vista. -_- It has gotten loads of viruses and I really dislike it as it's not good to have a Dell Inspiron Windows Vista Laptop as it's just hella slow. -_-

Anyway, thanks. I will check the Minidump bit and see if I can find anything recent. This might help me with my problem..

Also the mouse is Logitech, not a great choice but it came with another netbook we got. >.>
The mouse I have doesn't seem to be well known as the closest model I could get when checking for drivers is like a similar number model and even then it's meant to auto install the drivers without any help. If I do try to upgrade or downgrade it will still cause problems because the mouse has the latest drivers..

You might want to check this setting. Press the windows key and the pause/break key. Then go to Advanced system settings, upper left of screen. In the box that opens go to the advanced tab and click the settings button under startup and recovery. If "Automatically restart" is checked, un-check it. If you are getting blue screens un-checking this option will let you see them and then you can write down the error code.

How do you do minidumps?

I am a bit unsure.. the only thing that it might be is PerfLogs which I dont have access to. (My account is admin so>.>)

Edit: I did the access thing, there was folder in that titled Admin (Had to get access to that) in that, there was nothing. o.o

edit edit: One thing that is strange is now, whenever I plug in my mouse, it works. I wonder if there is a small thing that happened. Okay cross that.. My mouse just doesn't want to work AT all. It works sometimes..

You wil need to start being more specific.

Please replace "it" with the correct noun.

We also teach English.

Just go to the website for your netbook and search there for the specs for your netbook or read you manual or google "maximum memory for (the manufacturer and model of your netbook)" . Without the quotes and parentheses.

You will continue to have mouse problems until you get a quality mouse.

HP is a quality manufacturer.

Well the BSOD/Reboot trouble happened again and well I used it because, I just typed it so I am sorry about the error.

The maximum memory is 1gb... .-. So I'm sure now that I will either have to reduce the stuff that causes strain and heating problems or get a new laptop, a proper laptop with at least 3gb of ram. And right now, I wouldn't be allowed to get a new laptop so I will just have to reduce my high ram taking tasks.

edit: Wrong one, I can upgrade to 2gb of ram so, I'll just have to see.

SinRival,

You can monitor you temps easily with either Speccy or CoreTemp.

there are links for both in my sig.

You reduce your temps by:
1. choosing PowerSaver as a power plan,
2. reducing your display brightness
3. directing a desk or table or floor fan at your netbook.

I always use PowerSaver and keep my brightness to a minimal usable setting. Then fan gets used on hot days or if the temperature reaches a high level.

If you suspect an overheating problem there are a couple of things you can do. One is always use your Netbook on a hard flat surface, don't rest it on a pillow, blanket or anything soft that is going to block the cooling vents on the bottom. Another option is too get a small can of compressed air and use it to blow any dust that may have accumulated in the cooling vets. You can get it at most computer shops and retailers that sell computer accessories. And as mentioned you can run an app to monitor your temps in real time while your using your PC. What you want to watch are your processor temp and video card temps, if it has the sensors. Also cooling fan speed. The BIOS should show you your CPU temp, but that will not be under load. Look though your BIOS settings and see if there is a setting for over temp shutdown or over temp warning. A lot of desktop motherboards have these settings but your Netbook may not. You may be able to adjust the settings so you get a warning (Beep) before it actually shuts down. Just have a look for those settings and post what they are set to here before changing them. Like I said though you may not have them, laptops/netbooks are usually quit limited with BIOS settings compared to a desktop motherboard.
If it is overheating its because there is something wrong with it, its not because you are using X number of apps or because you only have 1 gig of RAM. My daughter has an HP Mini and its basically on 24/7 running facebook, playing videos, music and or doing a video chat and as far as I know its not overheating. Her worst complaint is that it slows down under load.

I only use my netbook on my lap because I don't really have a hardsurface to use it on, unless a book can count for that? (I have loads of books,) For my mouse I actually set it on books because I don't have a desk. .-.

Also I think the reason my computer is having problems now is because I have been recently doing video editing. (Bad idea) and trying to upload it to youtube, The quality is set on 720p I also do a lot of image editing (Another bad idea)

Right now I have my computer set to Power Saver, uninstalled some games and things I don't need. I do still have a few things.
I haven't had a problem for now maybe because I uninstalled Windows Live Collection and Google Chrome. My mouse is.. working okay, It seems as if it's not causing the problems so I am just slowly taking this step by step to eliminate the problem.

Edit: Does anyone know a good spell checker for Internet Explorer? As I need some help sometimes when spelling words so I do need some sort of checker.

edit edit: Installed Speccy

Ram and Motherboard temperatures 40 - 50

Hard Drive stays at a cool 35 degrees.

It feels a lot cooler than normal. Which is making me happy. ^ ^

edit edit edit: Watching videos on youtube = Max temp = 63 degrees.

Awesome Laptop.
Using it on your lap should be fine. The point I was trying to make was you don't want to block the cooling vents on the bottom of the laptop. Putting it down on your bed (blankets) or a pillow or any soft surface that can smother/cover up the air vents will cause it to overheat. Summer temps in your room can cause it to run at a higher temp too. My quad core Athlon II is running at 33 C and speccy shows my motherboard temp as 40 C. This room is on the cool side. 40 to 50 is on the warm side but I wouldn't panic over it. I would expect a laptop or netbook to run hotter than a desktop. If I get a chance I'll have a look at my daughters HP Mini and see what kind of temps she's getting. I'll post back when I get a chance. I've got a few other items on my to do list before I can get to that. ;)

EDIT: I personally consider Logitech to be a quality brand, even so they do fail from time to time just like any other make. Try that mouse in another PC to see if you have the same problems. If you do then the mouse may actually have failed. If not then its a glitch with your netbook. One thing that can happen with sudden reboots like that is system files get corrupted and then other weird things can happen. Once you get one or two spontaneous reboots the odds go up that you'll get more. Running the system file checker may be a good idea at this point.
