Hi

I'm new on this forum and happy to join to your community.
Now days i hardly try to solve my laptop problem with re-installing it's windows.
it has a Home premium 64bit windows with a sticky serial number.

My laptop Model is: Dell xps l501 A with two usb 3 socket.
the reason that i want to install the windows from a usb is my DVD rom has problems and can't reading any DVD disk,

So I created a bootable usb 3 windows installer with the official program and boot windows installer from it.
after a fast loading the language and location windows appeared and i hit the next and after that hit the install button.
after a fast loading this error page appeared:
"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now

seems like the installer don't detect my flash drive , because in browse windows i can see only my pc drives and dvd rom drive.

the USB 3 driver is: Renesas USB 3.0 Driver
and this is the download link in exe format:
Download Dell XPS L501X Notebook Renesas USB 3.0 Driver A02 Driver for Windows 7 x64 - Softpedia

to istalling the driver in installer i need the driver files with dat format.

any suggestion?

Hi,

Usually the driver for the USB3.0 port isn't loaded until Windows has booted. Plug the USB drive into a USB2.0 port, and then try to boot from it.

This is the first case I can remember of an OP without USB2 port which resolves this issue normally. Are you sure there are no other USB ports on your PC?

Let's make sure you have a confirmed official Win7 ISO with SP1 downloaded and written to flash stick using the tool given in steps 1 and 2 here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If the error repeats with the official installer, then unzip the USB 3 driver onto the flash stick in a folder and browse to it from the Load Drivers link. You should be able to browse into the folder to pick up the driver on the X drive shown in Explorer. If this fails use another flash stick which you plug in at that prompt.

yes Dell xps l501 has only 2 port that are usb 3 version.
and the dvd rom also has a problem with reading dvd and cd.
and the driver for usb 3 is in exe format that windows setup can't install it.

For a driver that's an .exe you need to run it as Admin, choosing the flash location where you want it unzipped, then browse into it from Load Drivers to find the driver.

If you have a Dell which only has USB 3.0 ports then it must be new enough you can ask Dell Tech Support how to boot a Win7 installer.

You can unzip the installer from the desktop to run Setup as Admin to do a Repair Install,
as long as you have a working Repair CD on standby in case it becomes unbootable.

You can also replace your DVD drive or borrow an external DVD drive.

Hi,

According this this review:

Dell XPS 15 (L501X) Laptop Review - Exterior

the USB3 ports are backwards compatible with USB2. This means you should be able to create a Windows installer on a USB2 thumbdrive.

Can you try that and let us know?

Regards,
Golden

Yes. i tried it and didn't work.
seems like the windows need a driver to completely detect the usb sockets.
really bad idea that a laptop have only two usb 3 sockets.

what about i use e-sata port and a pc dvd drive to install windows?

Hi,

If you plug your mouse into the USB socket/port, does it work?

Hi,

In your BIOS, can you check to see if there is a 'USB Legacy' setting or similar, and make sure it is enabled.
