Hi all,

Need help with installing Windows 7 to a retro Fujitsu Stylistic ST5010 Tablet PC.

Hardware Specifications:

Processor: Intel Pentium M 1.00GHz
RAM: 512MB
Storage: 40GB HDD

Being a Tablet PC, there is no internal CD/DVD Drive. And being an older, retro machine, it does not support booting from the likes of a USB stick.

Tried two different external USB CD/DVD drives, it recognised neither (Can't see Plop coming into the equation at this point).

I took the hard drive out and put it into a laptop, installed Windows 7 (32-Bit) right the way through to the desktop, then put it back into the Tablet PC. This did not work (Expectedly), and the machine only flashes a bluescreen for a split second before restarting altogether after the "Starting Windows" load screen. (Might it be necessary to pause at a certain stage, then take the hard drive out and put it back into the Tablet PC to complete the install for this to work? I.e. before providing a username, etc).

Am now stumped. Have been considering purchasing an external CD/DVD Drive that connects via PCMCIA, but am not hopeful this would work, the idea seems convoluted.

Any and all assistance/suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

I took the hard drive out and put it into a laptop, installed Windows 7 (32-Bit) right the way through to the desktop, then put it back into the Tablet PC.

If you went as far as the desktop on the other machine (laptop) , then it is set up for the laptop and not surprising it didn't load on different hardware

You could put the hd back into the laptop and use sysprep generalize shutdown before transferring hd to the tablet. But it might not have all the drivers that are needed for the tablet .

out of curiosity, what is that 40gb hd ?

The other way is to put the hd into the laptop. Format ( not delete ) the botched win7 partition. Then apply ( not install) the image from install.wim. Presumably there is a 100mb system partition already on the hd from the installation you already did.

Then transfer the hd to the tablet and it should start the setup phase.

drivers for the 5032 might work:

Win 7 installation has basically 3 phases:
- Copying files to the drive and reboot.
- Expanding and installing Windows
- Creating a user profile.

Once it ends first phase on the laptop, shut down and install it on the ST5010 Tablet PC so it install and configure itself on the ST5010.

Hi SIW2,

Thanks very much for your response.

Performed generalize shutdown on the laptop, transferred the hard drive over to the Tablet PC... and success! Windows 7 is now up and running, albeit with just few missing drivers... Drivers — ImgBB (:p). The link you provided should come in handy, as hopefully will this official archived page http://www.fujitsu-pc-asia.com/driversupport/archiveddriver/Tablet/drv_tablet_st5010.html

It is great the solution was simple, excellent suggestion. This has been an interesting learning experience, i.e "How do you install Windows onto a computer without using either of the two most conventional methods - Optical media and USB?".

And as for the hard drive, it is only a generic 2.5" IDE Hitachi Travelstar 40GB I happened to have; the original hard drive was removed by the previous owner.

Thanks again!

All the best

Hi there,

I tried your method prior to SIW2's,

1. Shutting the laptop down after the "Copying Windows files" stage, then transferring the hard drive to the Tablet. This did not work, only resulted in a no boot manger message after turning the Tablet on.

2. Shutting down after "Expanding Windows files", then transferring to the Tablet. Again, no boot manager message.

3. Waiting for all stages to complete, then after restart transferred hard drive to the Tablet PC. I can't remember exactly what happened now, but it did not work.

Ultimately, I did not keep continuing with this method. The ribbon cable in the Tablet PC connecting the hard drive is fragile and definitely not up to repeated disconnections and reconnections that seem required for it.

If I went wrong somewhere let me know. I would be happy to try this in another computer in the future if the same scenario as the OP arises again.

Best wishes

I can only think a reason to not work. You begin installation on the laptop as UEFI-GPT and the Tablet isn't compatible or You begin installation on the laptop as Legacy-MBR and the Tablet isn't compatible.
The important is that you had win 7 installed. Very good.
