Problem with sound card

Have just done anew build and installed an Asus Xonar DG sound card in this afternoon -just like in my Sandy Bridge build.

Now I have tried installing the driver but it goes half way and then stops with the message in the pic and I have no idea what this is about.

Never happened on the other machine so can anyone tell me what this means please?

Hey thanks for the ref tman I went into that site - it was slightly different and all I got was some files that required unzipping or something like that. The old drivers mate I don't think they even got past GO let alone collect $200 but I'll check first.

Well have exhausted all ways of getting this sound card put on and am giving it away for the time being.

Don't understnad it really cos my Sandy bridge didn't have any issues.

I'm guessing it is because the installer can't determine whether the front panel header connection is AC97 or HD Audio. Assuming you used it in the new build and the case is like most that has both, double check at the card which you used and select the appropriate one when that pops up. It is also possible that the front panel connector from the case is wired wrong, thereby triggering the pop up.

P.S. You can also use this modded driver,

UNi Xonar « brainbit

which is based on the latest available Xonar driver, and works with almost all Xonar's.

Hiyya stormy mate I have tried both the HD and AC connectors on the board and direct to the card. The same thing happens whatever I plug into whatever. I was advised by a friend to use the HD as the main connector so have left it at that now.

I have the very same card in my Sandy Bridge build on a Gigabyte board and it worked first time and I have no trouble running a 5.1 system off of it in any way shape or form. Now in my Ivy Bridge build on an Asus board I have this problem.

Now just as matter of info when the card is plugged into the board it (in the SB build) disconnects the I/O audio socket and I was quite expecting this to happen with this set up.

What I do have is a secondary front panel wiring loom to a card reader that currently carries only the USB, SD etc card feature sockets. I suppose it is worth trying that and disconnecting the top front panel.

My contention is that this should not be an issue as surely it is just down to a straight connection between the card and the socket? Whether that is done through the board or direct from the card itself.

For something so simple as getting some sound going it just doesn't make any sense and one gets really tired of having to configure this with that for anything to work. I use it mainly for music mixing and customising my outputs - otherwise I probably wouldn't bother.

Well I only ever use the out socket for headphones to be honest and I generally have to do that from the back socket by unplugging my system - which is why I wanted the one at the front to work.

So I guess I shall have to disconnect the board HD plug and leave it with just the back panel of the Xonar to drive my system. If I go down that track then i suppose I'll have to. It would have been really convenient though to use headphones at the front from time to time. Never mind life wasn't meant to be easy eh?

Perhaps I am a bit too pedantic or simple just thought it would be just a matter of plug and play

I only have a 2.1 set of speakers, but have them and my headphones plugged in at the same time. I have the headphones in the front out jack and the speakers in the rear out jack, and use the Asus control center to switch between them,



To use my speakers I just switch it to 5.1 and enable the 7.1 virtual speaker. I then moved all but the rears out of the circle as above so they can't be heard, and moved the rears around so that they are essentially the front speakers. Works great when listening to music, and a couple of quick clicks to go back to the headphones.

Thanks stormy I hadn't realised the speakers could be switched to headphones but having tried that I still don't get anything on the phones - in my old machine that is.

I have tried the case front panel jack and the card reader jack but zip the speakers go down a few notches when the phones are picked but still nothing through them.


My GUI with the Xonar is exactly the same as yours except for those you can see but I don't see how you move the speakers out of the circle.

What I did was to set it to 5.1 speakers first and then enable the 7.1 virtual speaker setting. That is where you have to be to be able to "move" the speakers around. That makes it so that the headphones are muted and the speakers work.

Then I just switch between speakers (set to 5.1) and headphones depending on which I want to use at the time, and enabling the 7.1 virtual again (for whatever reason that check box doesn't stick when you switch).

If you have a 5.1 set of speakers you will lose the rears doing this as the card only supports 5.1, but it saves having to switch plugs back and forth. And as I said you still get to take advantage of the built in headphone amp, which doesn't work if you connect the case front panel to the card and connect the headphones from there.

No go mate either I have a dead three sets of headphones or an empty space between the ears probably the latter.
