Problem with USB recognition

Just cloned my Samsung 849 EVO 250GB to a 850 EVO 500GB and now I cannot get the USB ports to accept anything or rather it tells me the software install for them failed. I get the Windows alert sound for a drive being inserted but then nothing in device manager or diskpart > list disk.

One of the drives is my imaging external and it worked before and does hook up to my other two desktops so why is this happening. Have done all the usual checks sfc chkdsk malware scans reinstalled the USB drivers from Asus and done the startup repair yet noting seems to work??

I don't know, but could it be a bad clone? You know a failed bit here, a missing bit there....
I might try cloning a second time.

Or, creating a disk image - from outside of Windows (from a imaging program boot disk) and then restoring that image to the new drive.
I never trusted that you could image or clone Windows while it is running without problems.

Yes well tried all the drivers Gav and all tell me they are newer than the latest ones I downloaded which in itself seems a but contradictory because if there were newer ones surely they would be listed eh?

Yes TV mate I think it might be a bad clone and I am wondering if I should just do another clean install and try and get something off the image I have got - seems od too because I usually set the Macrium to back up image each week when the machine is on.

I am getting some odd beeping this morning too don't know what that is all about two followed by one then one then three so something is very wrong with this machine and has been for going on for a year and the board well it is an Asus P8ZZ-V and just about impossible to get at a reasonable price now.

John, just putting in my 2 bobs worth, but you mentioned that there have been problems with this computer for a while. I could be wrong but aren't the USB's controlled directly from the motherboard, as you can use a USB port to install Windows with the right software.
So I would be suspecting a bad motherboard.

Yes Gav there are problems in the device manager see pic in event viewer heaps of errors. The driver issue says they are up to date and the downloads still say they are old ones and I just cannot see why or how they can be older than what is on the Asus site

Just done a another chkdsk and nil problems it says the beeps are still there and a Google it is related to the CPU.

Yep Ranger I have been thinking this for a while now as the problems keep coming and it looking like a swap out for a Haswell but it is going to be expensive.

NB the posting problem is back so if another clean install does not work then looks like this machine is going to be mothballed for a while until I can afford to refurbish it with new gear. Shame because it worked perfectly for a fair while.

Yes Steve I will have to look up how old that board is as I think I built the machine about October 2103 and I guess if the warranty is two years then I should be ok .

First I shall contact the Sydney service centre to ask about the discrepancies in what it is telling me about the drivers and if they can't tell me what to do I will have to RAM it to the supplier??

The thing is it seems like a monumental task to deconstruct even the board and install a new one if it is available. The other thing I was thinking too was I might be able to sell the CPU on and get something back because I was getting those beep messages that ref's the CPU. Plus the event viewed had some kernel errors but right now I am back at my partners place and will not get back to it until we get back from New Zealand.

Now if I have to go Haswell I am wondering if I should stick with Asus because as you know I have had a fair bit of grief with this board and the new laptop and my first choice would be Gigabyte as the Sandy Bridge has not missed a beat since I built that machine with a Gigabyte board. The other brands do not really appeal tome and I remember Gary and the trouble he had with AsRock gear, and heard not such good things about MSI either.

Did the 250 GB SSD work correctly and you didn't have these problems ?
If that's the case, it sounds like the MB is ok at least for the USB and drivers problems you have with the new 500 GB SSD.
Can you put back in the 250 GB SSD and everything works correctly ?

If you can do that you could see what drivers are installed for the current unknown devices.
Also, why do you need a 500 GB drive, if that's what the new SSD will be used for ? Maybe you could continue to use the 250 GB as the [C] drive, and add the 500 GB as a new partition to move some stuff off of [C] ???

Yes David it did work ok after a fashion but was filling up with I don't what - I tried to shift as much a I could to the 1TB backup internal and delete some programs but it just seemed to grow like topsy until the bar went red and having a disaster recently with mu old laptop drive filling up like it too I didn't want to go there again because I had to reinstall all over again after messing it up.

I do have roughly the same programs on each machine I have and have no problems with the others - the machine in question seems to have a mind of it's own it would seem. Programs are roughly the same as in my pics - the only difference is there are more NVidia ones.

When I get back I shall try the old drive back in as I was using it as the C: drive after the previous 120GB filled much the same way. Plus there was nothing wrong with USB ports then it just appeared out of the blue and after the new drive (850 EVO) blew the performance of the old drive (840 EVO) out of the water.
The drivers / software for the external stuff just loaded as normal before with that message that lets you know the software for it is being installed and it did start to do it but failed with this new drive in.

Did you try downloading the USB controller and Network drivers from the ASUS support site and manually install them ?
It seems those 2 drivers didn't install automatically.

Also, doesn't WizTree help identify where so much space is being used on ? All my [C] (OS + programs) partitions are less than 50 GB ...

Yes mate they downloaded but when I tried installing them I got that message about them being older than the ones I had but like I said how can they be older than what the latest ones they have put out??

The Wiz Tree does show me a whole bunch of stuff but the more one opens it up the more confusing it gets.

Just one thing though I did use the CCleaner feature > Tools > Duplicate finder but whether it was C: only or all the drives I will have to check again because there were a lot of them - duplicates. Now that would tie in with the WMP problem when I was ripping music it always had the tracks doubled up??

I would not trust a clone job if these kinds of problems cropped up.

If the OS installation on the 240GB was running OK and had all the then current drivers installed and working and then is not running OK and has drivers missing on the cloned 500GB then it seems obvious that something went south during the cloning process.

Check the 240 again to see, and if all is good there I would not spend any time trying to fix a bad clone.

Yep I agree mate it was not my usual and trusted USB to SATA adaptor I was using too and it did seem to take a very long time. Normally a clone takes about 15 minutes this one took over two hours so again I think you are right re something going belly up.

I am off to New Zealand tomorrow so when I get back I will try the 240GB again and maybe try the clone with the usual adaptor and if that doesn't work I will have to do a clean install and maybe use an image to fill in. But I don't mind installs it is the countless hoards of updates that get me.

My concern with the clone anyway is that brings across "problems" that have plagued this machine for such a long time now - although having said that even the last clean install left me with problems.

Yes, sounds like you are dealing with two sets of problems, and they are only casually related. Probably best to deal with them one at a time.

It always has amazed me that a better way of dealing with new install updates has not come up already. You know, like a package of updates or rollups for a certain time period. It's like Microsoft discourages clean (re)installs and doesn't want to do anything to make it easier.

Yep well it seems like they are making it a lot harder all round just lately eh? with that fiasco in China and then tugging the rug from under the faithful's feet by removing the IO's from Greg's tutorial ( the Heidoc site).

I know he has worked hard on the problem and made a work around re the issue but heck like you say bad enough we have to redo the whole rotten update stuff at all when some of it was resolved in part by those ISO's.

What I fid quite intriguing is that they designed and wrote a whole OS and it worked then came up with a SP1 then it is followed by generations of updates.

I found out just recently that one could clean out old Windows updates when I had a filled up drive problem and so I did this on my Win 8 desktop - my older upgraded Sandy Bridge and guess what 6GB of unwanted updates later and other clutter normally removed by CC) the machine began to run as fast as it used to. Now that is no exaggeration because I checked the before empty space and then the after empty space and how much there was in unwanted updates clutter. I actually saw the amount of updates that were to be removed so I know it is right and that took over three quarters of an hour for then to e found.

My point and thoughts are that when updates are released whether they are to be replaced or just altered they should make it so that the clutter is remove at that time. I know this might affect system restores but surely if one is making back ups of their system as one should do then this should not be a problem.

Ok Steve I will give this a go and wiling my tie away I found the tutorial by Shawn that Intel have for drivers though now I am off my phone I cannot find it again but will give that other way a try.

Just because I still am perplexed by the Asus support drivers being older than what is installed

But the boss is stirring and I suppose I had better get on with my final packing as we leave today for Sydney then NZ..
