Problems connecting wireless printer

I've a Dell Inspiron 1750 & a Canon MP560: they're next to each other on my desk.

I've been through the printer installation & select the network & wireless option, but the Dell can't find the Canon.

Trying from the other end, I go through the connection option on the Canon & when it can't find the Dell automatically it asks for the access point name.

I've tried entering the SSID - that didn't work. So I tried the network key (being careful with upper/lowercase) but that doesn't work either. The printer can't find the Dell.

Both the Dell & the printer happily find my wireless router, so the wireless 'thingies' must be working OK.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

I'd be glad of any help.

Hi Whippet. Welcome to the Forum.

First, make sure that the wireless printer is set up correctly (sorry if this is redundant).
On the printer setup settings, make sure the SSID is correct, the router's security protocol, and the long encryption key - all in the right upper/lower case.
Check to see that the "Wireless Connection" icon is illuminated and that you have some bars.

Next, in Windows, click on the Network icon in the taskbar and open "Network and Sharing Center". On the top line is "View your basic...", and click on "See Full Map". See if a wireless device is showing up there.

If it is then you have no network problem, just a driver installation problem. Let us know and we can take it from there.

Also: are you installing the printer driver from the printer CD or from a download?

Most wireless printers require the software be installed first and then the USB cable attached to a computer for the internet connection sharing to be setup.

Exactly right, once that is done then you can unplug usb cable and print wirelessy to your hearts content.

Before I start to check step by step what you suggest, I'd just like to ask how this wifi connection between PC & printer is supposed to work.

Do the PC & printer talk directly to each other, or do they communicate to each other through my internet router?

I need to have a vague understanding of how this wifi connectivity works.
