Problems/questions about RDP - and I am not a computer person.

Hi, I have an RDP issue.

Back story:
I never liked computers, and I don't know anything about computers or networking. I decided to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad Android Honeycomb 3.1 tablet for grad school. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit at home. I figured it would be nice to access my stuff at home (Revit, OpenOffice, MASTAN structural alalysis etc.) so I got some fix that allows home versions to act as servers, and learned how to forward ports to my pc and setup a static IP. I tried a few RDP apps, and used them for a few weeks.

Then one day they randomly stopped working. My WAN IP didn't change, so I assumed I got stuck with a Windows update that ruined it.

However, today I reset my router and reboted everything, and it still didn't work. I logged into my router, did some online searching, but I don't think I changed any settings. I did remove and reapply the allowed ports, but that's it.

Yet somehow remote desktop was working again - but there were differences:

Last time I could only have one person logged in at a time, so I had to phone home and tell my wife not to use the computer for a while. Now it seems to be allowing up to 3 users at once! Also, when I use the same Android apps, they don't work as well. It is slower, certain gestures don't work as well, etc.

I know I didn't provide much technical information, but if anyone has any ideas on what is going on it would be great to hear them.

Hi Aaron,

With Windows 7, you should only be able to log on with one user at any one time. This is because Windows 7 is a workstation and not a Server.

You said you applied some fix? What fix? And what did the Fix do?

If you can log on with more than one RDP session at any one time then that is very strange.

Hi, I'm not at all a tech person, so I don't really know. I did some searching and found something that looked decent from discussions. The impression I got (not being a computer person, mind you) was that the professional versions are set up to allow remote desktop while home versions have it, but it is disabled by default. The fix is supposed to allow multiple sessions, but I figured I just needed something for ONE session so I downloaded Concurrent RDP Patcher. The weird thing is that I ran that BEFORE my first RDP session when it was only allowing one session at a time.

Previously I didn't even bother logging off RD, because it would boot me after a while or if I logged in at home. Now if I don't log off (even if I do disconnect) the task manager still shows me as logged in. When I had 2 sessions running from my Android and one on the PC, it would ask me which session I would like to log into.

Oh and another thing - previously it would show me EXACTLY what was on my PC screen as I last left it. Now it treats each session as completely new - I have to open programs and files again for each session if I log out.

I am mainly trying to get a broad idea of how this stuff works so I know what's going on.
