Hi!
I have a strange(not common) problem..
I installed a few days ago the new nvidia driver 260.89.I did a clean isntall. When it prompted to restart it didn't restart my pc.I had to use the reset button. After that I could'nt restart my windows it simply said shutting down, and after that black screen(no video signal), and nothing happened.I tried to reinstall an older driver but the same problem, the driver installed correctly but the restart didn't work.In safe mode same problem.I managed to resolve by disabling the VGA card from the device manager and enabling after restart. But today the problem came back, and now it isn't working with the disable of the VGA card.
Can someone help me pls, because I cannot restart my PC from windows, only with the reset button. The shut down is working perfectly, only the restart doesn't.
Thank you!

I had a problem somewhat similar, except that my system crashed with an 0x124 BSOD, and wouldn't boot past the login window, until after running chkdsk /r.

Hi baric,

You could try the following...

  1. Boot into safe mode
  2. Click the Start menu and in the search box type device, look for Device Manager and click it
  3. Cick the arrow next to 'Display Adapters', right-click your display and choose 'Uninstall'
  4. Click the 'Delete the driver software for this device' box then click OK
  5. Reboot your computer
Capture.PNG

This will force windows to use the 'Standard VGA Adapter' and re-install the default driver for your device. You can then try downloading the driver again or the previous driver from their archives.

I have no idea what this 260.89 version is. I am subscribed to nVidia's newsletter and they regularly send me emails with notifications for new driver versions. My card is close to the one the OP has, installing 260.99 worked fine, no need for a restart at all.

if you are able to boot your computer successfully, i would say run driver sweeper again (after uninstall), and reinstall your last driver that worked.

I don't know which driver was worked before, but I will install the driver from my original driver cd.

This doesn't really sound like a driver issue, but rather a hardware issue.

Check the video card to make sure it is properly seated, and check any power connections to see if anything is loose.

Let us know. I'm on my way out, so it'll be some time before I get back to you.

Later.

sygnus21:I will check that, but if this is a hardware issue, then why is the card working perfectly in any game??

This doesn't really sound like a driver issue, but rather a hardware issue.

, but if this is a hardware issue, then why is the card working perfectly in any game??

Cause it could be something other than the video card. Power supply, loose wires, or it could very well be that the card is failing or intermittent (comes and goes).

That's why I said check all your wire/cable connections. And I'm not ruling out the driver issue, I just said it doesn't sound like one.

Also, I think it’s a good maintenance to occasionally remove and clean the contacts of your PCI cards every now and then. This ensures that the cards are properly seated and have good contact.

I do this at least 2 times a year, sometimes more, and it also ensures my case isn’t full of dust or other debris.

My two cents.

GT9600, thats a fairly older card yes?
260.XX is for the latest nVidia cards. You probably do not want to use it. I just went back to 197.XX from the 260.XX driver, for my GTX260.
Like suggested above, safe mode, uninstall driver in device manager, add/remove uninstall all nvidia software, driver sweeper, uninstall all nVidia software. reboot Install 1XX.XX series driver, reboot....

System restore??????????????????????

Quite possible Direct X 11 or latest PhysX not for your card.

Earlier discussion I had started over the 260.XX driver.

Or, it could be the fact that it was not related at all to the nVidia driver install, but something else that was installed in the same time period.

Have you verified in WU to see if anything was installed within a day of your attempted nVidia driver install?

Remember, this is happening regardless of which driver you are using - which indicates that it is suspiciously not related to the GPU driver at all, in the first place....
