One easy way is to use small icons.

Hi Cindy,

Do you mean the overall height of the Start Menu? I think if you set the properties and uncheck 'Store list of recently opened programs' and uncheck something else like 'Documents', 'Pictures' or 'Music' this may reduce the size of the programs list.

Found it !!!

Right click the start button > Properties > Start Menu (Tab) > Customize > (At the bottom) Start Menu Size - just set mine to 20

Also you can have your task bar top, bottom, right or left
