Programs not working after hard drive upgrade

I did an image backup to move my programs from one hard drive to another, this worked fine. But when i re-sized the partition to give myself extra room in storage, programs stopped working from the ati graphics software to google chrome,etc. also i got the message that my system is low on RAM. is there a fix, or do i have to start over?

Any reason why you can't once again use the image backup to get to a stable system?

If you can, then we can walk you thru the steps to accomplish your objective.

When resizing C if you meant shrinking the C volume down in size you failed to consider the amount of drive space reserved by the system for things like System Restore points as well as the paging file used for virtual memory, Recycle Bin, etc. When not having enough drive space available the "out of memory" error will be seen where not much of anything will run!

Now for the warning on back and forth reszing of OS partitions in particular is to make sure you have everything backed up before expanding C back out to at least where it was before in the event the Partition Table ends up trashed?! It's risky at best while you still may able to restore C to where it had been.

Here the opposite is seen since when planning this build I didn't want to run into the out of space type errors and continue to keep separate storage/backup drives rather then repartitioning the host OS drive. A second drive is used for trying things out there like the next version of Windows to come or another OS. I opted to run larger OS drives from the start.

The best time to plan out any partition changes is when you have almost nothing installed. Once you later find out the next program doesn't fit you then realize you didn't leave enough room available for the OS side of things. And this is what you ended up with there. To save the present Windows install as well as all the program installs you the one option is simply to expand C and hope all goes well for you.

i Didnt shrink the partition, i expanded it so i have 60 gigs more in storage

I see. When you refer to moving programs was that only by making an image backup or did you move the program folders over to the next drive and plan to run them from there? That would automatically stall any programs with registry entries pointing to a folder on C while you have them moved over to D, E, or any other drive.

I suspect despite a possible 100% restoration the resize threw all of it into limbo! Something was offset. The problem now is simply reinstalling the ones that refuse to run in order to repair the existing installations of each.

Reinstallation the only solution for this issue. First formatted and repartitioned as you need, everything will be ok. All the best

Well I think the main problem is how softwares install to begin without the need to reinstall Windows. Once you restored the image made of the programs the original registry entries were made invalid! If you had simply expanded C without the image the programs would still run when going to start them up.

The system now sees copies not original program folders and files for each. If the programs needed to be activated that would be another item to add to the mix.

Filling out more general system information in your profile would be a help. I noticed you ilsted the 64bit Ultimate as the OS while only having 2gb of memory installed.

The recommended minimum for the 64bit Windows is 2.5gb. Dropping in a pair of 2gb dimms or adding more of the same 1gb dimms would be a large ram memory wise to see everything running smoother overall.

As far as the programs themselves that are not running the image you made of them may have been corrupted somewhat where the solution for them would a reinstall of each of the one running into problems.
