The standard test procedure for network connectivity is the remove or at least disable all firewalls and prove that the connectivity works. This is OK with software firewalls but is not a good idea or simple thing when the hardware firewalls in routers are involved

It may be achieved with most routers by placing the two systems in the "DMZ" zone of their local router (what this does is to actually open all ports in the router to a specific system set by local IP and or MAC address. The name may differ dependent on router make. If this is not an available option on your router there may be an option to disable the firewall completely.

These methods are only to be used for testing, of course

Once you have the systems communications working to your satisfaction you can then re-instate each firewall one at a time and set-up each individually to work. This is a more involved process than the ideal but it does mean that you can concentrate on each individual component

Holy moses, I am sorry about your irritation its just the reason people are suggesting third party applications is the fact windows VPN can be very touchy.. There have quite a few threads of people having the exact same issue as you are.

I am starting to find evidence online, however, that Telus is blocking port 1723 and you can only get it opened by paying for their VPN package. (THOUGH I DON'T SEE HOW I MADE IT PAST AS FAR AS I DID IF THEIR FIREWALL IS BLOCKING 1723.....SEE ABOVE)
However, when I talk to Telus, the tech department has no idea what I am talking about and is pretty much useless.

I don't want to use a 3rd party routed VPN. It'll be throttled all to hell and not private. How do I know if it's private if I have to have them link me and route thru their systems.

To me, it should be called a VSPN...

If I know it is 100 % secure, I guess I could try going that route, but this is a SERIOUS prerequisite for what I am doing. Personal info will be traversing the connection.

I want you too look for a feature on your router called port forwarding....

Theoretically you should be able to use iport and set an external port that is not blocked by your isp.... Alot of isps do that now days to limit your bandwidth as a consumer...

I have pretty much given up on this.

I tried Hamachi as one person suggested, and just like Network Magic, it screwed all my network settings to the point where I ended up restoring from a system image. It messed up PS3 Media Server brutally, and that's a no-no.

I might try another route to access my media on the road. I won't even try the VPN, or pseudo-VPN route unless I can find a step-by-step tutorial that covers all aspects, not just enabling incoming, or setting up outgoing VPN's, but routing as well. And only thru Windows, definitely not any 3rd party app/program

Personally I have have never had any issues with hamachi messing up any network settings... and I have a relativity complicated network.... one massive firewall, 2 routers and 1 switch... a 16 bit subnet. Active directly, dns servers house locally... a few servers... and still never had any issues with hamachi unless you try to reconfigure the settings....

Which is exactly why I highlighted the "VPN" connection in the screenshot. Teamviewer does "RemoteSupport", "Presentations", "File Transfer" and "VPN" connections.

One other reason for using a third party solution such as Teamviewer is that as we are talking about linking two private individuals it is likely that one or both parties will have a dynamic external IP address which would mean re-setting the VPN on regular basis.

This for instance is a non issue with Teamviewer

As far as Hamachi messing things up, it messed up my PS3 Media Server settings or something. Maybe somehow conflicting with Java or something, as that is the primary software driving it. (PS3MS)

I don't know how or why, as I am not skilled enough to diagnose stuff like this. All I know, is that as soon as I disconnected, then uninstalled Hamachi, my ability to use PS3 Media Server returned.

I am not sure if it created a different subnet or what, which caused conflict......dunno.

My other problem with Hamachi was that when I tried to uninstall it, it started copying files into my PC, and Spyware Docter started giving me warnings, and quarantining items.

While I haven't COMPLETELY given up on this, I have started to focus on MY own network as my roommate returned from camp, and since then, we have been having "discovery" issues between his Vista machine attached (wired cat5e) to a DAP-1522 AP/Bridge, and my PC that is wired cat5e to my DIR-655 router.

It worked when he left for camp, and now it won't. I might post another topic later today if I can't get it figured out.

My roommate and I have the same workgroup.....STR8UPMENACE

Here is the previous setup......Took a minute to setup. Original connection was made with the WPS "auto-connect" function on the DIR-655 and the DAP-1522. Worked awesome, full internet to everyone and all devices viewable, and sharing worked PC to PC as well as all PS3 Media Server functions. Cross shared folders were visible from his PC to my PS3 media server.
My PC folders were visible to HIS PS3 media server.
This setup allowed GB connections between his PC<---->his PS3.
And allowed GB connection between my PC<----->my PS3.
Amanda-PC just tagged along as a WiFi connection, but visible, even though her workgroup name was/is WORKGROUP. Amanda-PC had no media servers or such just a browsing machine with Public folder shares, strictly a YouTube portal for her.


Here is a self made diagram of what is going on now......





The basic layout of the network has not changed. There is still only one internet connection.
I just layed it out as such so that you could see that now it is as if UPSTAIRS and DOWNSTAIRS are totally seperate.

I have FULL internet connection right now DOWNSTAIRS. Full GB PS3 media server function DOWNSTAIRS.

Roommate has internet UPSTAIRS on PS3 and PC. As well his PS3 media server on his Vista machine has a GB connection to his PS3.

Amanda-PC is still visible now, but only to my Win7-PC, and not the upstairs setup.

It's as if two different sub-nets now.


The problem is, I have factory reset all devices in the hopes to get back to square one, and tried following the same steps with the "WPS connect" function of the D-Link router and bridge, but I just cannot get the same setup we had before.

I always have full internet on both my devices and full GB media serving downstairs.
My room mate currently has full internet on both his devices, and full GB media serving PC<--->PS3upstairs.

We just can't share PC to PC. We have to use USB jump drives to share media PC to PC (guerilla style ). The connection (DIR-655 router to DAP-1522 bridge/access point) is OBVIOUSLY there, or he would have no internet at all as he is "standalone" upstairs and there is only one DSL modem/internet connection (downstairs in my room).

I have tried every method suggested in the DAP-1522 bridge manual, to no avail. Now confusion has set in.

Anyways, that is where I am at right now, and why I have put my VPN quest on hold.

I know you stated both on work network. Will have to try that here after my room-mate wakes up in a few hours.

I hope my slap together mapping doesn's confuse you. Network mapping is not functioning well now, so I had to take snips of various icons and slap it together. Not totally efficient with Paint yet.
