We’ve heard a lot about PS3 jailbreaks in the past few weeks. One such jailbreak solution called PSGroove relies on a vulnerability in the USB on PS3 meaning all kinds of devices could be used to jailbreak.
Sony may have closed the hole with firmware 3.50, but someone already seems to have found a new way to jailbreak the machine, and it uses an official Sony product to achieve it.
A Sixaxis or DualShock 3 controller connected to the PS3 via a USB port can jailbreak the machine. Unfortunately it isn’t as simple as just plugging it in, though. A PIC needs to be installed inside the controller so you’ll need to do some soldering.
Once installed your PS3 can be launched into debug mode without losing any settings and while remaining capable of being updated. This is also confirmed as not a port of PSGroove, but another method for jailbreaking.
Full instructions on how to install the PIC can be found on DCEmu Reviews.

Matthew’s Opinion
At the moment it looks as though this is a new method of jailbreaking a PS3 using the USB connection when a controller is plugged in. It is unclear whether this uses the same solution as PSGroove, and if it is also blocked by the firmware 3.50 update.
If this is different, and relies on the use of an official PS3 controller, it causes a problem for Sony as they can’t go and block use of official controllers. Some update will probably be required to alter the way in which the controller communicates with the console. That could be problematic.
The good news for Sony is this requires some soldering, meaning its a lot harder to implement than PSGroove was so fewer gamers will attempt it.
