Hi guys, I have finally given up on my laptop as it runs so hot when using simple applications (early I7 laptop processor)

So I have a new laptop, but rather than mess around formatting them both, I'd much rather just put my hard drive in the new laptop.

What things should I do to set it up correctly.
I assume sysprep is a must to sort out driver issues, but is there anything else you would recommend?

Thanks guys

For a minimum of hassle and full operation, you are going to have to reinstall Windows to that hard drive if you move it to the new laptop. The old hard drive likely has an OEM version of Windows on it from the old laptop. OEM versions can't be moved to another machine. You'll have to use the activation key from the new machine to reinstall.

It doesn't currently have an OEM as I prefer to fully format the computers I have first, so its set to how I want it

So what version of Windows did you install? I assume by your post that you wiped the drive of the bloatware in the laptop and started over. Did you use the laptop's OEM key? Or did you use a retail key from a new disk?

It is not recommended to move a Windows installation from one machine to another. You can do it, but there can be annoying glitches and errors that will pop up over time that can be hard to track down. You must own a retail DVD to do it of course.

The procedure is basically to switch drives, boot the laptop using the DVD, and then perform a Repair Install of Windows. This will replace the old drivers for the old laptop with new drivers for the new laptop - in theory. All the drivers will not be replaced. Some will need to be manually installed. Most will need to be updated to the manufacturer's drivers. Then it might work without problem, but it is not a 2-click operation.

It is recommended to do a clean install. More work, yes. But better results.
Windows has a utility for transferring system settings from one PC to another, that can simplify things a bit.

But in general there is no good substitute for hard work.
