Q: "Run as Administrator" privileges?

Could someone define exactly what elevated privileges a program gets when it is "Run as Administrator"?

Or point me at a suitable web page.

Some programs will not install/run unless you select that. Perhaps someone else can go into more detail about it than I can.

Say you are in a corporate environment. Most end users will not have the power to install software.

SO, if the need arises for them to HAVE a piece of software, instead of logging them off and then logging yourself on to install it, you can "Run as administrator". You type your own credentials in, and you will have full privileges to run the install program. It is a one time thing that doesn't affect the end users privileges at all.

When you say "exactly what elevated privileges" I'm not sure what you mean. It depends on what level admin is running AS an admin.

I'm not sure that an omnibus list exists. But here are a few.

Installing software, ActiveX controls, or device drivers
Changing network settings or disabling/enabling network adapters
Changing the system time
Taking ownership or changing NTFS permissions on some files and folders
Modifying files in %SystemRoot% or %ProgramFiles%
Configuring the Windows Firewall
Running Task Scheduler
Defragging the disk
Restoring backed-up system files
