Quick Launch - Icon background colour

Could anyone tell me why, when I create a shortcut in my Quick Launch toolbar (which I use a lot) and choose an icon, the background to the icon is automatically coloured in black? This doesn't happen when I use the same .ico file to create the same shortcut on the desktop - the background remains its original colour.

How would I stop Windows automatically filling in Quick Launch shortcut icons with black like this?
