Ram Upgrade Single or Dual Channel ??

Hello Guys,

i would like to upgrade my memory !! I have a hp pavilion 6617c with dual channel ram. Can i use this : Patriot PSD34G13332 Signature 4GB PC10600 DDR3 Desktop Memory Upgrade - 1333MHz, 1x4096MB, CL9, Non-ECC, Unbuffered at TigerDirect.com ??

Is there any difference ??

The main thing is dual channel works with two sticks the same, if you have two empty slots, you want to find two sticks the same to add at the same time to maintain dual channel mode...

It's the motherboard that determines "dual channel", not the memory itself.

The only thing is the single channel. Everything else is the same. So can i use the single channel ram in my PC ??

Not quite. It is the IMC (integrated memory controller) built into the CPU and not the motherboard, unless the board has an odd number of slots. For AMD that is all CPU's from the first Athlon 64, and for Intel whichever of the i series it was that they added it.

HC4L to answer your question, yes you can run the memory in single channel, but you will get better performance with it running in dual channel.
