Random Crashes & BSOD on HP Pavilion dv5-1199ef

Full Retail Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (not installed on the notebook by OEM). Installed about 1 year ago.

Notebook is 3 years old.

Nvidia videocard Top temperature while gaming (92 C°). Average 88 C°
Intel Processor top temperature while gaming (78 C°) . Idle 38-40 C°


Hello all,

lately, like for almost a month now, my notebook (HP Pavilion dv5-1199ef) has been randomly crashing. Mostly when gaming, or running any resource hungry application like watching HD movies or Blu ray discs. Sometimes also when watching videos on YouTube.
Weird thing is that there's no pattern. Sometimes I can use the notebook for about 3 days without a crash. And some cursed day it will constantly crash!

Thing is that I seldom get a BSOD screen. Most of the times the game or app just freezes, screen goes black and all USB peripherals power off. But the Notebook is still powered on and I am forced to manually restart the computer.

The other day I got a BSOD that said "USB_Bugcode" but simply stayed on the BSOD for an hour, never finished the dump file. So I had to force a restart, losing the dump file. 2 days ago I got another BSOD which is attached.

I think I have narrowed it down to an unknown device which has an issue with a driver. Thing is that it don't get anything from the report codes, they just throw random numbers that I don't know how to interpret. Otherwise it says there is a problem with a unknown device & unknown driver which doesn't help at all.

I use my notebook mostly at home with a USB Pro Logic II Headset (Gamecon 777), a Razer Mamba wireless mouse & an USB powered after-market notebook cooler. That's the only 3 peripherals I use constantly, sometimes I use an USB flash voyager GT for files transfers & small backups.

I am running all the latest drivers for the PC & peripherals I use. I installed the latest NVIDIA notebook drivers (270.61) for the Geforce M9600 GT.

So, I’ll appreciate if someone who is more knowledgeable to help me identify the problematic device or driver. Or if it is something else.

Lets start with sptd.sys and old drivers


Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp,sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
