Hi Everyone,

I am getting random crashes when using my windows 7 machine. I attained 7 by upgrading from vista home premium 64-bit. Never had any crashes or problems on that setup. I have got 7 now for a few weeks and lately it has been crashing at random.

I am not sure if it started when I got windows 7 or later. The following happens: My screen turns black and has a blue box in the middle saying : "OUT OF RANGE!" (this I suppose is related to either frequentie or resolution) but I found out that a few seconds later my music would repeat the same second or so over and over.

I have been looking through eventviewer and noticed an error occuring now and then. related to a atksgt.sys that was being blocked. I looked it up and it had something to do with either deamon tools or atari game copy protection. I uninstalled deamon tools which had no succes. After that I unstalled all atari games with again no succes. Finally I deleted atksgt.sys resulting in errors that it cannot by found (in eventviewer).

But the crash still occured. And after another look in eventviewer I noticed the timing of the atksgt.sys errors were not in sync with the crashes. I did find a warning with source winit telling me to check avgrssta.dll which I suspect is related to AVG anti-virus which I have running. which should explain the randomness of the crashes since it runs at all times.

At this moment I have no clue whatsoever what to do. I'm adding a minidump to this post and if you have any further questions please ask. Ow and my specs are on my profile (with the screen).

S. van den Bergh

You used the term upgrading. If you really did an upgrade (your programs did not have to be reinstalled), I suggest that you do a clean install. A clean install is always best, and I think that it will solve your problem.

Hi and welcome

this crash was probably caused by your video driver specifially ( atikmdag.sys). I also note that you have several really old drivers that need to be updated

I would update all the old drivers
Code:
secdrv.SYS fffff880`06dc4000 fffff080`06dcf000 0xfffff8000000b000 0x4508052e 9/13/2006 8:18:38 AM

I would also run a system file check to verify and repair your sytem files
type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

Let us know the results as it may need to be run more than once

Hey Ken thanks a bunch for all the info and help.

I just did a scan and it showed no errors.
I'm going to reinstall my videodriver now (which I did while having these problems since the new 9.12 drivers came out)
Have got any advise how to track down which drivers are outdated?
thanks again for the help.
Going to uninstall videodriver now.

Ken will be by shortly to help, until then just go to device manager it shows what drivers need to be updated. Just type device manager in search. Glad to see that you may get a solution.

You can google the names of any of the out of date drivers and it willl point you to the maker

Hey Richard & Ken,

I just reinstalled my Videocard drivers and found out that the driversweeper I had installed did not fuction correctly. This time everything was uninstalled properly and installed again. Hoping this fixes the problem. But since the crashes were random I can't really check.
About the checking drivers in device manager. I do not fully understand how this works. I got to device manager and I can let it search for driver updates but it doesn't actually tell me which drivers are outdated. I've tried update around 15 devices and they all told me that they're all updated so I got the feeling I was doing something wrong. Thanks again for all your help.

If you have an out dated driver, it will be clearly shown. Click on the arrows on the left, to display the full tree.

I am of the belief that I dont use driver manager or anything like it. I go get my drivers manually.. It is a PITA but I can pick and choose the drivers I want to install. Usually if it is working I leave it alone.

Ken is right on both counts PITA and its the best way. I tend to try to find the easy way, which is not always the best.

I must say I usually update my drivers myself too. everything seems to be working (except the cardreader, which I never got working in the first place). So I was quite suprised you said that some drivers were outdated. Again thanks alot to you both for you support. Still no crash has occured so my hopes are up. I'll leave the computer on through the night and if there isn't a crash in the morning I'll tag this as solved.

Update: Ok so I've had no ploblems so far but tried starting up a game and it immediately crashed like I described in the first post. I've zipped the mindidump once more (Don't know if that even changed but better safe than sorry).

Update 2: so after posting the last update I started the same game and it instantly crashed again. after the reboot I tried a different game: worked fine. Went back to the previous game and it worked fine too. The game is called Heroes of Newerth and is currently in closed beta. Has worked fine so far with win7 didn't get the idea the crashes were centered around it.

Have update all the out of date drivers that I could find (and uninstalled the ones I didn't use) but It still crashes (bsod?) I don't think it's doing it randomly anymore but it does crash everytime I try to start a game. I'm pretty much out of Ideas here. Does someone know what I could do?

Reinstalled DX and tried starting up a game but still it crashes. (the game in question is Dragon Age: Origins) New dumpfile(4) added.

update: dit another system file check but it found nothing. And after a while I got a crash when trying to put on HD in a youtube movie I was watching full screen. I've added another dumpfile(5) from after that crash.

another dumpfile(6) from a crash when playing a game.

Only one dump file in the 3 files that you uploaded.
It points to the ATI display drivers.
Since you've udpated the ATI drivers, then I'd have to suspect a hardware issue with your video card.
Try another video card (if you don't have one to try, purchase one that you can return and try that).
