Random power off after sleep

Hi all, first post. Well, my computer randomly powers off. This starts happening after my computer puts itself to sleep. This is the third time I've experienced this behavior on a fresh install (using 3 different hard drives so its not the disk). I usually disable sleep but I forgot (yet again). It seems from past experience, that from the first time my pc goes into sleep, the windows install is RUINED. If i can disable sleep right after installing windows (so sleep never runs), windows is fine and has no issues.

Ruined because it's going to power off at random. I dual boot with this PC, so I KNOW it's not a hardware issue. I have installed windows many many times and have only encountered this issue when the system goes into sleep. The second time I encountered this, I had accidentally put it into sleep when selecting reboot. It went to sleep and wouldnt wake up. When I rebooted, it was experiencing this exact issue. This time, it put itself into sleep, i woke it up and it went dead. I have rebooted 3 times and it comes back up fine each time but just randomly crashes. I thought it might be Silverlight but i just had it crash on me without Netflix open. Has anyone experienced this and is there a fix before I reinstall yet again?

Yes, Windows was installed on a (refurbished) dedicated drive.

Thing is, when I first rebuilt this PC about 3 months ago, I had purchased a 2TB hard drive and installed Windows on it. Everything was fine until I accidentally put it into sleep, then the power off started happening. I ended up formatting and reinstalling Linux

Now I've just picked up this refurbished drive cause I want to dual boot and installed Windows on it. Things were good until it went into sleep, now it just randomly powers off.

One thing I forgot to mention is that when it powers off, it wont power back on, its like dead. I have to pull the power cable out of the power supply and wait like 5 seconds and plug it back in to get it to power back on.

I've since booted back into Linux and have 0 issues. Any thoughts?

First up Modupre mate I wouldn't use any refurbished drives - I realise that the expense is probably why folks use such devices and the other thing is I don't like large drives either - a lot of data and lose the drive you lose that too.

But anyway I am not really familiar with Linux so I cannot advise you one way or the other with it's set up. What I might suggest though is that you save any data first and see if this is of any use to you.

It might mean that you have to reinstall both but at least it will all be clean and you can slot the data back in once done.

Well this issue has happened with a brand new drive and now with the newly purchased refurbished drive (i agree with you on using refurbished drives but it was only $15 and I'm not keeping anything of value on the drive [i only need a windows install for menial tasks such as activating my ipad in itunes and upgrading firmware of my quneo, etc])

The windows install is always on a dedicated drive (i hate mucking around with partitions) so lets pretend I didnt ever mention linux (as it should not be affecting windows in any way)

I guess I'm just going to have to re-install windows and make sure I disable sleep. Once I'm up and running for a bit I'll respond if this issue persists but I have my doubts.

I've finally gotten around to reinstalling Windows. I disabled sleep first thing and have yet to experience any issues. I'm wondering if there's a way to completely disable sleep. For instance, I want to get rid of the option in the start menu completely, or disable its function. Anyone know if this is possible? I already changed my power settings for sleep to never, but i would hate to accidentally click sleep (or have a friend do it)

Well I don't think there is an option modupre there are some entries in the registry but unless you are knowing exactly what you are doing it is not worth the risk . I have my power settings set to high performance and Never sleep and I never have that much need to go near it. To stop others touching it I guess create a passworded account for your self alone as admin.
Plus means being a little more vigilant.
