Short story. I have a laptop with windows 7 ultimate on it.
It was needed to run remote access for a short period of time until we replaced a controller.
However something went fooie on it and it was hanging on the boot animation.
Spent a couple of days attempting to use tools to repair the boot.
Finally threw hands and reinstalled ultimate 7 from the install CD.
And am getting the 80072EFE error from windows update.
Searched here, attempted the several fixes.
Different fails, this is what's in my download folder as of right now.

Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is D8A2-12CF

The KB3138612 (Windows Update Update) & KB3004394 (Root Certificate Update) both say "The update is not applicable to your computer.".
The KB4534310 & KB4539601 both say:

Installer encountered an error 0x800b0109

A certificate chain processed but terminated in a root certificate which
is not trusted by the trust provider.

Which is why the root certificate installer is the third KB download.
Order of attempts at fixing is in the download time stamps.


Suggestions welcome, this particular laptop is merely used to access equipment at transmitter sites, and locally at that.
That aside, I'd like it to be fully patched anyway.

as you have re-installed allready....try Simplex..... can be downloaded from MajorGeeks
(turn off Windows Updates first -- about 60 of them..... lot faster and more effiecient then windows update)

The update has prerequisites.

Install Service Pack 1, KB4474419 and KB4490628.

Windows Update works with KB4534310 installed.

Busy installing it now

The update has prerequisites.

Will update in several hours once the Service Pack 1 does whatever it's doing.

This is an update.

Apparently the install chain is missing the Service Pack 1 update:
KB976932
And once that finished installing, I meandered back to the machine and have found it busy downloading 172 updates.

If you did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit in your laptop (no description provided), you should be able to run the April 2025 version of Simplix UpdatePack 7R2 afterwards and bring the operating system completely up to date.

If you did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1

32bit and though the install says it includes service pack 1, I had to install service pack 1 via the KB976932 update.
Go figure.

Machine is all up to date now thank you.
