Hi,

I have messed up with file association and all my programme files have *.lnk after it. There icons have become *.lnk and their original symbols disappeared with this link and I can't see which one is which.

If I re-install my office again, would it change my file contents or pst file?

All of my icons have Wordpad icon.

My PC is Acer and I have tried the repair option.

How did you install Office?
Do you have a M$ Office installation disk?
If you run setup from the installation disk there is a Repair option.

In addition to Megahertz's suggestions are the files in question your Office personal data files or are these files actual Office programs like Excel. Word etc..

If they are your personal files reinstalling Office will not fix them, as they remain even if you uninstall Office.

You should be able to try an Office Repair by opening Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office, right click on it & select Change, which should open 2 Repair options you can try.

If you uninstall & then reinstall Office you will have to set up your Email Accounts in Outlook again & after that it should find the .pst files again if they are in the same location as they were in the original installation.

Have you tried reassociating the files with Word? Here's how to do it: Open File Explorer; right click on a file you want to open with Word, and choose "Open With". Check the box at the bottom which says to always open this sort of document with Word. Now, if Word is in the above list, click on it. If it is not, then browse to WINWORD.EXE and open it with that.

Hi Brother,

I have tried to open with and two choices come; one is Word.docx and the other is wordpad.

How could I change to one choice word.docx please?

I Live in Reading, England and we can talk on phone. All my task bar and desktop icons are alike with .lnk links. My Google icon is fine.

When you are telling Windows which program to open with a particular file, or which program to "associate" with that file, you need to know where these programs are located on the drive, so that you can browse to them. Here is where the MS Office 2010 programs are located:

In 32-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\POWERPNT.EXE
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE

In 64-bit Windows:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\POWERPNT.EXE
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE

So, in your case, since you have 32-bit Windows, if you want a file to open with MS Word, you will browse to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

You will then tell it to open with WINWORD (in that folder).
