Ready to move over....but scared!

Hi folks - first post on this forum. I am fairly computer literate - my computing goes back to Vic 20 and Sinclair Speccy, but I am pretty old now, and not really wanting hassle! I am about to buy a new WIN 7 desktop, as my existing XP system is beginning to fail.

(My confidence has not been helped by downloading the WIN 7 upgrade advisor, only to find that it won't run!)

What I want to know, apart from all the really interesting problems/solutions is this:
I have a lot of somewhat elderly progs - sorry, but i really LIKE Office 97 - and I want to know if there are likely to be problems installing my existing programs onto brand new W7 machine, please?

Also interested in ANY help that anyone wants to offer

You could always run these older apps in XP mode. If you are buying a new pc, the new processor will surely support virtulaization so you shouldn't have any problem with this. This forum is full of threads regarding XP mode. Have a look around and welcome to the best windows 7 site.

Nice computer experience you have

If you buy a new computer, with windows 7 installed on it, you should be able to experience the very nice Windows 7 feeling.

I have seen people running MS Office, but you can also use Open Office.

If you post the specs of your new computer, many people here can tell you if it will give problems.

Rather strange the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor did not execute.

Why buy a new computer when the old one works?

If I were in your shoes, I would stick with my old existing setup, where everything is familiar and works.

zx81 - I love your handle! Tried the advisor again- it won't run because it can't find mscorwks.dll. As I have been having some problems with Framework downoads refusing to run, I assume the problems are related. Never mind, as I was merely curious: I am going to a new machine anyway.
I have a complete, up-to-date copy of my c:drive on an additonal USB stand-alone drive. With the new machine, I don't suppose I'll be lucky enough just to copy to the new machine c:drive.....no, I thought not! Thanks for your help
