Readyboost.

My laptop is an Acer 5738Z with Windows 7 Home Premium.It has 3 GB Ram.If I put in a USB stick and used it for Readyboost,how much benefit would I get?What I am trying to get to is if I used a 4GB USB stick for Readyboost,would this give as much
benefit as upgrading my Ram by 4 GB.?

If you have a 32 bit version of 7, 3GB is probably enough for your needs.

What do you do with the computer, just basic everyday use?

Readyboost probably can't get the performance that another stick of RAM would. But if you don't fully utilize the computer now, you probably won't notice any improvement either.

Sorry,I should have said that it is 64 bit on my laptop.I don't do anything particularly taxing on my laptop,just general use.It's just that I happen to have a spare 4GB usb stick and was wondering what difference it would make.

Some folks here have benefited from Readyboost, but above 1GB installed RAM, I never saw any improvement. If you have the flash memory already you can give it a try and see. It won't hurt, and it's easily configured either way.

Consider using a 2GB SD card. It will slide in out of site and help out a little. You won't notice much, but it can't hurt with the price of flash memory. 2GB should be plenty.

With your configuration you will have zero effect - if anything, it will be negative. For proof, look into your Resource Monitor > Memory tab (type Resource into start/search and hit Enter)) and look at the following:

1. On top of the page, see how many "Hard Faults" you have - I bet it is zero. That means there is no paging activity at all.
2. Look at the colored line below. All the blue (light and dark blue) is available RAM and will be used before it is even thinking about using the page file on disk (or on the stick). I also bet there is still quite a bit of room.

Bottom line, all you would buy is the ready boost overhead with no positive effect at all.

I'm beginning to agree with this. I added the flash drive because everyone said that 2GB of RAM wasn't enough for x64, which I thought might be the explanation for some things being somewhat slower on one of my rigs vs my other with the same OS. The primary difference being that it has 4GB of RAM. Maybe the lag is due to something else.
