Reallocated Sectors, Toshiba MK5075GSX

Hello there,

I've checked my HD condition with Hard Disk Sentitel earlier today. This software shows a pretty bad health state (8%) with 1096 reallocated sectors.

However, chkdsk /p on C: hasn't shown a single bad sector.

I am bit confused now. How could I be sure if my HD is dying? Which software should I trust?

I'll be grateful if you suggest ways of fixing these reallocated sectors.

Hmm, HDD Sentinel showing you the SMART data on the HDD so I would say HDD Sentinel. I would guess since the reallocated data is readable checkdisk isn't throwing errors. But I am as curious as you, and would like to read more experienced members' comments.

Try with CrystalDiskInfo, you can change to decimal format (Function - Advanced Feature - Raw Values - 10 [DEC]). Crystal Dew World It will show SMART info.

When a hard drive detects a bad sector it is replaced internally by one reserved for the purpose. This is done internally to the drive and the OS and chkdsk has no knowledge of it. This effectively "repairs" the bad sector. The Reallocated Sector Count is the number of replaced sectors.

But there are a number of problems.
1. There are only a limited number of sectors available for this purpose. After they are all used up sectors can no longer be replaced.
2. Sectors don't usually go bad for no reason and that reason is still there. There is usually some internal problem with the drive that is creating bad sectors. Such problems are usually progressive and become worse over time. There is no way of knowing how long, or short, that time might be.

The drive needs to be replaced. Backup your data now while it is still possible.

It's frustrating how a hd can screw just for a 2 years (I bought it at the end of June, 2013). I couldn't say that I haven't been careful with carrying my laptop on and etc.

Hard drives (new or old) can fail at any time, and they often do so with no warning or apparent cause. Consider yourself fortunate to have such a warning. Others are not so lucky.
