really slow windows 7 i5 HP elitebook - need help speeding it up!

Any suggestions how to speed up my laptop? It is really laboriously slow .

Score : Processor 6.8
Memory : 5.9
Desktop Performance to windows aero 5.0 (lowest score)
Gaming Graphics : 5.8
Primary Hard Disk : 5.8

It takes forever just to start applications such as chrome. Not sure what to do. The drive has had regularly scheduled defrags.

There is only two items in START UP and nothing else that I can see.
Explorer.exe is using the most memory 27k with HPPA_main.exe in second with 19K.

the laptop is a HP elite book 8440p.

Any suggestion would be helpful.

Fastest way to speed it up dramatically is fit an SSD drive problem with laptops the hd is 5000 rpm were a desktop is 7000 but a ssd its super fast480gig now only £56

I assume your running a 64 bit windows its odd ram amount. Its almost certain its down to slow 5000 rpm disk I put a ssdin my desktop the start time went from 1 min 15 secoonds to 29 seconds and webpages are super fast

I agree, but I can't buy anything right now, so that is why I am trying things from here that might help in the meantime.

What I have done to boost my friends Laptops is to install a small SSD (128G - US$30) for Windows and programs an replace the CD / DVD with a HDD caddy to place the existing HDD (for data). You'll have the speed of a SSD and the space of a HDD at low cost.
