Hey guys.

Decided to update my ATI Graphics drivers the other night. Big Mistake. Half way through install my computer decided to BSOD with the driver as the file reason.
I thought "Right, i'll reboot it and reinstall the driver." Well, my computer would reboot as soon as the Windows loading screen had finished.

I popped my repair dvd into the drive, fired up startup repair and it couldn't repair it. Tried a couple of times and still no good.

Long story short, I repaired AGAIN and it magically started working. However I am now having lots of issues.

1. Devices/Printers control panel just loads forever and is blank.
2. If I try to load Advanced System Properties I get two error messages:
  • "C:\Windows\system32\netid.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using original installation media..."
  • Same error again but with C:\Windows\system32\remotepg.dll"
3. Certain windows built in tools are apparently not compatible
  • C:\Windows\system32\powercfg.exe : This version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

Other things are yet to be found.
sfc /scannow says it finds corrupt files but cannot repair (attached the .log file). (Can't even run SFC in Repair DVD, says reboot pending, tried dism but that fails too.)
Tried a repair install but it fails when copying windows files (because their corrupt).
Tried installing Win 8 (upgrade) but it fails after install and rolls itself back.

Getting sick and tired of this now :(

Helpppp!

Thanks,
Jonty.

Hello Jonty and welcome to Seven Forums.

Others may disagree with me, but considering all of the issues your computer has, I'd jump right to a Repair Install. If successful, a repair install will fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers. etc. After complettion (which should take about an hour or so) you'll have to reinstall Windows Updates (which could take more than an hour.)

Or since this is a custom build, you could take this opportunity to perform a clean install. That should pretty much guarantee you a superior performing Windows 7 (barring any hardware issues.)

This sounds like an install that's repaired even though still infected.

That's why the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start begin with disinfection from boot or Safe Mode if possible.

I would start at the top to make sure it's clean, then do the repairs given to see if it will repair adequately.

If not the steps lead up to if necessary running Factory Recovery or getting the superior Clean Reisntall.

Hey guys,
Well I tried a repair install. It threw about 30 errors saying x.dll is not compatible with this system blah blah but I just clicked ok on each one and the rest of the install completed fine (last time I cancelled install because there was so many file errors). Its all working perfectly now :)

Thanks,
Jonty
