I do have Avast installed. Don't know if that makes a difference. Other programs installed, but they don't run at boot.

With Avast, Acronis (essential before I started messing around!) and MS office 2003, I have all these loading at startup.

With 6596 I didn't get any significant change on the initial boot, still around 62 seconds or so. But there was a huge change with all my software installed. My earlier post was 167 seconds, after loading Avast and MS Office 2007.
Under the same conditions, with 32 other programs fully installed, Internet and LAN active I get this.Still not up to the Vista rebbot but improving rapidly!

I don't think anyone should be too depressed with poor results. This test depends on quite a few criteria. Unless rules are drawn up, comparison is menaingless. It depends how well you have hacked your Msconfig "startup" tab or the DLL's being loaded. On mine, for example, I have sorted the former but, so far, done nothing with the latter, although there are a few there that I do not use.
There is also a question of different computers, different hard disk speeds and, of course, where on the hard disk you have installed 7. If it is the only OS installed, then it will be on the closest portion to the head (the outside), if a dual boot then it may be on the inside, when installed second, and therefore slower.
This is overcome, to the most extent, with modern HD's. In an earlier post, I complained about a huge difference in the HD speed index, from 6801 to 6956. My htoughts then turned to the above comment so I reformatted and installed 7 as the only OS on my (three year old) HD. The index improved back to normal.

XD wow, hehe.

I seem to be having bad fortune when it comes to booting =/

For some reason, my PC would hang during the booting animation. The hard drive activity indicator light would just stop flashing. However, I haven't had that problem anymore though since the first day, so yea. But it still boots relatively slowly on my PC for some reason. And it has to do with the boot animation, yet I don't know why I'm the only one the new boot animation seems to be negatively impacting reboot time. The reason why I say the animatioin is to blame is that when I check "No GUI boot in ms config, I get about 100 seconds to reboot, as opposed to the 132 seconds with it on. Quite odd.

Yea 6956 =/ The problem with my HDD hanging even happened once during installation too, so yea. I believe its an IDE. Device manager says its an ATA, which is an IDE right? Apologies for the noobyness, frankly I don't know much about hard drives since I've pretty much always been on laptops and never delved into installing new HDDs.

I've tried messing with a couple of settings in Msconfig boot options, but nothing helps it boot quicker except no gui boot, which is a shame, because I like the new boot animation very much. Hence I've left it on, since I'm not usually in a hurry with booting, and I'll often leave my computer on sleep mode anyways.

Hi napilopez. One thing I found with 6956, was that it only installed generic drivers for the graphics card. I am sure this will be rectified in later releases. Of course, I was disappointed with the initial view of my desktop.
Then I began my usual prwoling around and clicked the update drivers in the Device manager. To my surprise, something I have not experienced, even in Vista, it actually found the latest Nvidia drivers and installed them and I witnessed a miraculous transformation of my desktop. In 6801 I had to do quite a lot of hacking to get the graphics to work for me.
The point of my story - maybe you should try this, or at least have a look at your graphics card website to see if they have an update. - It could be the problem.
Still, even 100 seconds is below par from the results that most are getting. Is that on a raw install or have you already installed some software?

Oh I have definitely installed some stuff. I installed the drivers I had for vista on to my pc, although I suppose I should look for the newest drivers. However, my I do always manage my startup apps and services with msconfig. Curiously, it seems the boot animation was offended when I implied it was too slow, and now my PC boots up in 109 seconds. Awesome(relatively). However, no GUI still boots quicker, now giving me 85 seconds. I'm gonna mess around a bit more. Can anyone try seeing if they find as significant a difference without the GUI boot?

I also expected being below par. I bought my laptop for about 600 dollars from radioshack, lol. I just needed anything basic for school, although at least its videocard is decent enough for basic gaming and good aero performance.

Well another problem overcome. This one is definitely interesting!
I opened the Device manager (Again!) and looked at the properties of the hard disks.
On mine, it may differ with SATA's? I found that, by default, Windows 7 had put in the "write cache" option in the properties. I unticked this, rebooted and ran the assessment again.HD Right up to 4.7 - the best I ever achieved when in Vista.
