If I turn on AHCI, I get a nice 8 second delay during the POST while my computer initializes the controller. Thus, I leave AHCI disabled as I don't get enough gain over the course of using my computer to earn back the lost 8 seconds.

Hmm, 8 seconds really stands for a slow controller, but do you actually boot/reboot that often?!

8" sounds a very high delay, mine is rather 4" or 5" but never higher than 6". You should check your BIOS settings, maybe your MB runs a useless test or is set with incorrect HDD controller values.

Nope, 8 seconds is what it takes. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R rev 1.1 with the F9 bios. I've read of others with the same issue on this board and other Gigabyte boards. I've also read that the F11 bios update drops the delay down to about 4 seconds....but I'm not inclined to flash my BIOS for a 4 second increase.

In all honesty, every test that I did with a stopwatch when AHCI enabled was a tad bit slower, my HDTune results were a few MB/s lower...so I'm completely satisfied with the box in IDE mode.

And across the board, this mobo doesn't POST very fast. From a power button press to "starting windows" in IDE mode takes 21 seconds. But then with my SSD, it boots up in about 15 seconds. Performance once it's up and running is flawless. It's stable and runs great. I'm very pleased with this board.

I can relate to that... I get a minor performance increase when in Windows, nothing that really makes a noticable difference, but rather just that my HDD access speeds in benchmarks show a minor improvement. With AHCI enabled, regardless of my first boot device, it always checks for media in my SATA DVD-RW, which takes about 4 to 5 seconds. Other than that, I haven't noticed any other slow downs.

I hardly ever restart my PC anyway, once it's on, it's on for a few hours at a time... So it really doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I changed about 4 different bios settings and my restart time went down to 54 seconds.

I disabled a few items that were starting up, like that drop box app. I got it down to 48 seconds now. I'm sure I could do more tweaking and get my restart time down even further but 48seconds is more than fast enough for me. I can live with 48 seconds.

Nice... Looks like a pretty solid setup. Little bit more RAM and a nice GPU and you'll have a pretty sweet computer.

That's only due to the fact that 'boot priority' will be reset to defaults (#1: optical drive; #2: HDD) when you enable AHCI, so you just have to remove your Disc Drive from the boot devices list.

EDIT: And YES, threads of the type "What's your..." and "Show us your..." are bragging threads to a certain extend :devil: BUT envy serves as a great motive to optimize your system to gain those 2% of extra performance that separate your system to the one of Person X with the higher scores!

PS: Good thing I'm not a big fan of Freudian psycho-analysis because then one had to argue that it all comes down to "What's /Show us... [the size of your weener]!

Well, tried that over the weekend... But no matter what I try (short of disconnecting my DVD-RW) my BIOS adds the DVD drive into the boot list every time anyway. Slightly irritating since my PC won't start up if there is a non-bootable disk in my drive, but I never leave any disks in my PC anyway.
