Hi Guys & Gals,

I've managed to cobble together some old episodes of a TV program (all are in .avi format).
Need a program that I can use to edit/split out the opening & closing credits and (in some cases) adverts etc. Don't need to do anything spectacular otherwise.

Can anyone point me towards a program (preferably FREE) that would do this?

Thanks In Advance.

Hi Woodssi. I'd try VirtualDub 1.9.11. You can download it at VirtualDub download (at SourceForge) - virtualdub.org
Hope it helps you!!! ;)

windows liver movie maker should be able to do it - but personally i don't like it - you may well think otherwise.

i really like avidemux myself, but some people find it hard to use - google for it if you are interested.

both programs cost no money.

Virtual dub does work--but it is relatively complex and not entirely intuitive.

Windows Movie Maker can do it.

Both Machete and Machete Lite can do it.

Virtual Dub, Windows Movie Maker, and Machete Lite are free. Machete costs I think $30?

Virtual Dub, Machete, and Machete Lite have an advantage: by default or with an internal setting, they do NOT re-encode the material. This gives you the best possible pic quality. I'm pretty sure Windows Movie Maker DOES re-encode and at times the loss in pic quality will be noticeable.

My vote: Machete Lite. Easy to use, nothing fancy and you don't need anything fancy.

Works like this:

Load the file

Mark the beginning and end point of the first part you want to cut out. Delete it.

Move to second part you want to cut out. Mark beginning and end points. Delete it.

Etc.

Then resave the file. Very fast and uncluttered.

Avidemux will work also. More intuitive than Virtual Dub, not as intuitive as Machete Lite. Not sure if it re-encodes.

avidemux won't re-encode unless it needs to.

not re-encoding means much faster saves, keeping the same quality as the original.

Thanks to all for the advice...

Ignatz - Machete is giving you a 14 day FREE Trial. Top Notch program; pretty easy to use as you say.
Wallonn - I'll keep this one handy for when my FREE Trial period runs out (if I can't get it all done during the 14 days).

Cheers
