A vote here for CCleaner. I've been using with x64 Vista and now x64 W7 for as many years as that takes.
I run it once a week so it would be difficult to say I notice any difference in performance.
However I recently ran CCleaner and Raxco Perfect Disk 10 on a friends laptop.
He had not had any housekeeping habits for the two years he'd had the laptop so it was full of rubbish.
These two programmes had an amazing effect on boot times and and performance in general.
He declared that it was faster than when he first got it.:)

Did you know that Acronics Emergency Boot Disk does not support Wireless Mouse and Keyboard?

I too use Acronics, only to learn that I could not use my mouse and keyboard when booting to the rescue disk.
Acronics has confirmed this issue. They recommend using a USB or PS2 Mouse and keyboard.

Not good.....

Not all (many?) stand-alone boot disks do...

Acronis, like others, does "support" a wireless mouse on some MOBOs if the MOBO BIOS does. But the Acronis Emergency Boot Disk itself does not load any wireless drivers. The same can be said about GPARTED and other stand-alone boot disk utilities.

As for wirelss keyboards - better have a plugin in the closet somewhere for repair purposes.

That is the way it is. Not good, not bad, just the way it is.

EDIT: Always test any type of emergency boot disk on the target system before it is needed.

What Registry Cleaner do you recommend for Win 7 64bit?

Thanks,
Bill

I would recommend the free version of Glary Utilities (Glary Utilities - Free Utilities to Clean Registry, Fix PC Errors, Clean Privacy). This small free version has worked very well for me. I have been running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a Lenovo laptop for several months now and it has never failed me. It does what it says -optimizes the computer by cleaning out invalid and/or outdated registry entries, shortcuts and temporary files, and boosts Windows' speed while protecting your privacy and security be securely erasing your internet browsing history and removing spyware. I am able to select each module individually or do a simple one-click maintenance that does the whole lot for me. Overall, it does an excellent job and keeps my laptop running smoothly. I notice improved boot up and shutdown times after using the software. More importantly, I have never encountered any problem with Glary Utilities. You should try it for yourself. I am sure you will like it as much as I do. :D

It does absolutely nothing and has as much effect as a placebo.

Yes, but it doesn't do anything - the only thing that speeds up 7 is hardware. The registry doesn't need cleaning as 7 doesn't search the data sequentially. The spyware scanner can't match MSE. The rest is dressing.

What can I say? If it is just dressing, it sure is a darn pretty good dressing.

The most effective means of keeping your registry clean is to figure out exactly what applications you want to use, reinstall windows, re-adding those applications in order of frequency of use, then don't change anything.

One of the biggest piles of sh*t 've ever heard.

Has it ever occurred to you that in a business environment it's necessary to configure machines so they don't slow down over time in order to minimize costs, and that's how it's done.

I certainly follow that rule. I try to keep my machines as clean as possible...and I would be willing to bet that a lot of guys on this forum also take efforts to keep their installs neat and tidy. And for those who don't, I'd bet quite a number of them format and reinstall on a fairly regularly basis.

When I play around with new apps I often
1). do it in a VM
2). use the Try and Decide feature of Acronis True Image 2010. Thus, when I am done playing, I just snap back to the way my machine was....unless the app is really something that I want and then I commit the changes to disc. But more often than not, I'm disappointed with newer apps and trash them rather than keep them.

C'mon guys......this thread is specifically for a reg cleaner that works effectively with Win7.......if I wanted to reinstall Win7 everytime I wanted to clean the reg or go through all the trouble of VM'ing an app before deciding to keep it I wouldn't have even looked or posted here for that matter. The major part of the population are not going to reinstall windows to keep their reg clean and are not looking here for business purposes. For you purests posting here......try to make suggestions about what reg cleaner to use rather than recommend things that the average user is NOT going to do.Again...thanks to all who posted suggestions on Win7 reg cleaners that work.

I use both Ccleaner and Advance System Care. Never had an issue with either of them. The important thing to remember is to use the back up feature when running either program.

Iobit advanced system care is a really good one i was using on XP.

But be aware when cleaning the system services to don't disable registry keys you might think useless. Could be quite a pain crashing down the machine.

The point being, people who actually know what they're doing don't have to go looking for registry cleaners.

Another incredibly asinine statement, don't stop now you're on a roll! :sarc:

Really? If you already have all the programs, applications and media you need, installed on a clean HDD, running an OS with no factory bloatware , and you have never uninstalled anything, why would you need to clean the registry?
