hello, i have two questions

(1)
i'd like to:
recover a file from a particular day -- 5/8/2011 from a .VHD created by Windows Backup on my ex-hdd.

problems and attempts:
- i cannot do this from the "recovery" option on Windows Backup anymore as the drive itself is not recognize by WB. (power outage killed the ex-hdd, fixed now with chkdsk.)
- i attached the vhd created by windows backup as a separate drive, inside it i see the last backup created on 5/13/2011, but i dont know how to recover earlier versions (i checked with other backup done the same way, this is what's suppose to happen).

(2)
if you understand what i'm trying to say can you help me write a better way to ask it on forums? my english is poor and i dont have the technical background to write something understandable to other people. or how to go about researching a solution. i'm having a hard time getting results on google from searching stuff like "recover from vhd on certain date", "how to open vhd" etc.

thanks!

I assume you used Windows Imaging. In that case your 5/8 image may have been overwritten by the 5/13 image (unless you saved it).

There is one other chance you have. If you have a restore point from 5/8, you can recover the file from there. Here is how: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/132087-shadowexplorer-recover-lost-files-folders.html

In the future I recommend to use another imaging program if you want to keep older images. Free Macrium otr free Paragon are good candidates. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73828-imaging-free-macrium.html?ltr=I

Hmm, but your picture does not show a 5/8 image. If there is a 5/8 VHD, you should be able to attach it.

Looks like you are running server 2008?

It can't find the shadow copy in that pic.

You might be able to find it with Shadow explorer - if you are lucky.

whs: there's only one vhd in the backup folder, the 5/13 vhd. the other working backup drive from 5/14-5/25 only has one vhd 5/25, but i can retreive stuff from days prior if i chose.

SIW2: by vssadmin list more i only see 5/14 onwards :(
i downloaded shadow explorer ShadowExplorer.com - Downloads
it listed 5/14 onward shadows for my working drive. but nothing for the drive the died.

thanks!

i think i'm having a related problem as this
Win32 Kernel How to display my snapshot history in System Restore Wizard? VHD, Vista, and VSS.

there are some XML files along with the VHD, could the older informations be stored on those? they have names like "(bunch of numbers)AdditionalFilesc(bunch of numbers)", "(alphanumerics and dashes)Components(same here)", RegistryExcludes, and BackupSpecs. and another folder "Catalog" with "BackupGlobalCatalog" and "GlobalCatalog" inside.

thankies

run the ClikMe.cmd in this zip and then post the shadowlist.txt back

Thanks for the alert. The Paragon people really try all angles to popularize their products. The do have excellent products, but maybe as a German company they are a bit at a disadvantage to make the real breakthru.

I gather you are able to attach the vhd based on the post.
It's not clear what you find when you explore the attached vhd.
Are you saying the file in question is not there?

Personally I do not like important information relegated to shadow storage. I always make a fresh image. With an "old" image I delete it, rename it or move it.

I assume you have it now. It was posted for an hour while you were on this thread.

If you post the shadowlist.txt , there may be a way to help.

Recover from vhd

[FONT=&quot]Why don’t you try any third party software solution? Simply use external VHD data recovery application and salvage your entire data. Just apply this tool and browse your vhd file on the software. Choose any one scanning option to starting recovery. After completing the entire scanning and recovering process, tool will show you the entire preview of items with its creating date, extension, file name etc.
