Recycle Bin Corrupt and Permission settings confusion - external hdd

Dear Forum,

I am currently trying to move files and folders to my 1TB External Hard Drive (Seagate) - for reasons known to some members of this forum.

I am gaining the message 'File Access Denied' when I move mostly Adobe files to my external hard drive.

I am going to try and go through and see if I have taken the steps on taking Ownership - incorrectly and I do not know how to fix it.

The recycle bin has an error on it as I took the permission on the folder on the external hard drive 'It says that is corrupt'.

I am a total mess and unsure about the settings.

I know that this is mainly a Windows 7 Forum - but I wish just to see if someone would be able to assist me

Did you mess around with permissions only, or did you change owner as well?
Please post permissions of F:\ as it is now.

Wow - Thank you.

Some people are blessed with brains. I would not even know the first thing about some of these codes.

I saw a website - which had a link that you could download to get the permissions changed - but I am fearful of downloading the incorrect thing. I already have messed up my computer.

I think that you people see my posts and literally roll your eyes.

I am doing more chemo and trying to be positive about life. The medication makes it a drain and I only last around four hours a day.

With regards to my permissions - I read a how to geek website - instead of coming on here - and followed the instructions to making the User have the permissions.

I am not sure if I am supposed to then remove the permissions from the others or just run for the hills.

In regards to the copying of the data - that seems to be working - I gather that I will be doing a lot of deleting. Time to get to a clean install sooner rather than later.

I also like the fact of the research of the corrupt recycle bin - I ended up accidently turning on the computer from hibernating - it presented the error message and I said yes.

With changing the permissions in Elevated Command Prompt - will that affect anything else

I was sent this from the manufacturer -

I'm sorry that you are having issues with your drive. It seems that the partition on your drive could be corrupted. Please perform the following to see if it is able to recover the partition.

1. Go to Start > type CMD into the Search field and hit Enter.

2. At the black prompt type in chkdsk F: /r where F is the letter of your drive.


I gather that I am the most stupid person out there.

• Can you make file in root of F?

I am finding that if I try and move some files from the desktop - I can copy - and move - but there is still the original file left behind.

One such file is the following - I clicked on the properties - one screen shot only - I can put it in a Word document if more assistance.

Let's focus on drive F first.

Did you mess around with permissions on C manually?

I never ever touch C Drive - if I have it may have been when I was trying to fix this issue. I have been told this is the worst this to happen. I do not want too have fragments left on my desktop. I think it may just be sharing.

I have posted the cmd as you requested - I said yes to the command - I gather that this is a code like what is on some on the sites that can assist you.

My drive has a lot of information on it

After I have typed Y - can I close CMD?

Do this as well in elecated command prompt:

icacls  F:\  /reset  /T  /C /Q
rd /s /q  F:\$recycle.bin

first command resets all permissions... like you just created the file and didn't change it afterwards.
Second command delete recycle bin of all users on F.

Both commands succeeded?

Check afterwards if F still has permissions as in #15

F is fine now? You can create files/folders? Delete stuff?

cd  %userprofile%

You see C:\users\<your name> now.

icacls  Contacts /reset  /T  /C
icacls  Desktop /reset  /T  /C

icacls  Links /reset  /T  /C

I should have read the first command correctly

I should have run the command separately as you explained

I also should notify you that I did do a few tests to and from the drive with success

I disliked having a lot of items on my desktop

I think that the message on the end of the message on the F drive - which I am afraid to close the CMD means that perhaps everything is alright.

I am unsure of what to do now.

I am sorry - I became very ill and it took a long time for this process to do.
