Recycle Bin folder view settings won't stick when accessed via desktop

Hi, all. For years now I've accessed my Recycle Bin via its original system-supplied desktop icon and it comes up in Explorer with the settings I made years ago - List view, sort descending by Date Deleted. I just accessed it and it is now coming up Tiles view, ascending Name order and changing the settings does not stick. When I call up Explorer directly and click the Recycle Bin there, it displays according to my old settings - List view and descending Date Deleted. I'm assuming there must have been a system update that did this(?). Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this and, more importantly, does anyone know who to fix it?

I tried all the types under "Optimize the folder for" but that didn't work. I think this may be a different situation anyway since the Recycle Bin when clicked in Explorer displays correctly and, thus, the settings are actually saved. It's just, for some reason, now, when the Recycle Bin is accessed via its desktop icon, it's not using the Explorer folder view settings assigned it. Would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Update: Windows Update I did on 6/11/13 fixed this.

If no one has a better idea I would setup a new user account and test with it. I use all the same settings as you do and have not run into this issue; yet. Personally I always install programs for all users and keep 2 user profiles with the exact settings just in case one gets corrupted. (I guess I need to get a life) LOL

PS. By any chance are you using folder redirection for My Documents?

It used to be that my Recycle Bin would lose its settings, if I opened it when it contained pictures or videos.

In the last couple of months, it loses them every time I open it (regardless of the contents)!

I suspect that some MS update has "broken" something.

Lehnerus2000, I hope that works for you - it did not for me. But, it seems you've experienced the same situation as I have. Although I haven't had this situation ever before but sometime in the recent past, something has caused it.

Josea, you may be onto something, however what happened when I tried your suggestion is bizarre to me (not to mention frustrating). I created another Administrator account. I never could sign on with it - kept getting "User profile service failed...". BUT, after doing that, my original issue seems to have gotten fixed. I don't even want to mess with why I couldn't log in with the new account right now - given Windows 7's consistently inconsistent behavior, I wasn't even surprised it didn't work as it should. So ... I tried to delete the new account via Control Panel and it went through all the motions, asking all the appropriate questions, but, upon delete, didn't do anything. So I went online and found out how to delete the account via the Command prompt which seems to have worked fine. (BTW, creating the new account also turned off my auto-login of my existing account so I had to reset that as well.)

So now I'm back to one account, Ive restarted the system several times and my folder view settings are sticking whether I click the Recycle Bin in Explorer or access it via the desktop icon. Only a few hours to restore the system to the way it always was before nothing known was done to change it. Don't know how long it will last.

Thanks again for the responses. (Once I settle down from this experience, I may look into why I can't accomplish something as simple as creating an additional "useable" user account and remove it via Control Panel so y'all may be hearing from me on that pretty soon.)

The fixes in that link (at least the ones I tried) didn't fix it.
I have auto-folder discovery disabled too.

All of my other folders work correctly, so I don't want to reset them.

It's somewhat ironic, in XP the only folder that would hold its view was the Recycle Bin.

I just can't resist putting myself through the agony of getting Windows 7 to work as it should (or, I should say, as I want it to). I solved half the problem with the new user account creation. I can now create a new account and login with it. To do this, I had to add user "Everyone" with all permissions except "Full" to the User/Default/ntuser.dat file's permissions. The Event Viewer was showing that ntuser.dat couldn't be copied when trying to login with the new user account. I still wasn't able to delete the new account via Control Panel (had to use Command Prompt) and I just don't care (right now) as to why.

lehnerus2000, sorry the fix didn't work for you. It didn't for me either. I don't blame you for not wanting to reset all folders. I know it's taken me forever to finally get that all set up just the way I want it AND for Windows 7 to remember the settings. And you're statement regarding XP is ever so true though I think I somehow got it to eventually remember all the settings as well. I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to try what worked for me - setting up a new user account - but, I must say, all my settings are still holding ever since I did that. Only thing I can figure is, as Josea suggested, something mangled my user account and when I set up that new account which forced my account to no longer be auto-login, re-writing my account un-mangled the mangling. Maybe you could try simply making a change to your user account such as changing it from-to auto-login to cause the setup to get re-written. I would advise, that any time you try a change and it doesn't seem to have worked, you try restarting your system to see if that makes any difference.

It's not a major problem, just an annoyance.

I generally don't look in the Recycle Bin.
It's just that on the rare occasions that I do open it, I want to view to be in Details, so that I can easily check the file info without having to reset/resize the columns, or change the view settings.

Well, this situation is not resolved. Today, accessing the Recycle Bin via the normal Desktop Recycle Bin icon insists on displaying in Tiles view and changing it to Details doesn't stick. I don't know what happened to change things because yesterday it was working after I created and deleted another user account. I guess the PC gremlins must have invaded my machine while I was asleep.
The thing that just seems particularly bizarre to me is that if I run Explorer and click on the Recycle Bin, it displays as Details as I set it. I created a shortcut to the Recycle Bin (C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:RecycleBinFolder) and when Explorer is run from it, it displays as Details. When I use the normal Desktop Recycle Bin icon, it ends up displaying the RecycleBinFolder in Explorer just the same as when I use my new shortcut so what causes it to skip the user-defined folder view settings when run that way. I believe there has to have been some change made recently by something because, for years, accessing the Recycle Bin via the normal icon was picking up the user-defined folder view settings in Explorer and now it's not. I guess, for now, I'll just keep 2 Recycle Bin icons on the Desktop - the normal one so I can see whether or not anything is in it and my new one, which I can call Recycle Bin - My Way, for actually accessing it ... and hope that this gets changed back as mysteriously as it got changed in the first place.

I managed to fix this through a ridiculously simple step: change the view to "Large Icons". Close the window. You'll now be able to adjust the view and have Windows remember it.
