I tried the suggestions above and no luck (I have windows 7). Restoring the icons didn't restore the recycle bin image. What I did do, which does correct the initial problem, but created another minor problem that I was able to find a solution for. What I did was this: I went to start, typed "recycle" without the quotes, moved cursor to "recycle bin shortcut" and right clicked and sent the new shortcut to the desktop. That brought back the image but now I have two bins, the good and the bad. I couldn't drag it to the new recycle bin and it wouldn't let me right click and delete it, so I moved the new recycle bin off my desktop into a folder elsewhere. I wasn't sure if leaving the new one on the desktop would have worked, since my next step was to hide the old recycle bin by doing the following: start, control panel, appearance & personalization, change desktop icons, then un-tick the recycle bin and hit ok. That got rid of the old bin. Next was to go to the folder where I had dragged the new recycle bin icon and I dragged it back to the desktop. I had no idea if doing all this would work but it did. I didn't actually delete the old one so I'm not sure if down the road there could be any problems, such as if you have to reboot and since the recycle bin is not going to appear since I unticked it, I'm not for certain it will reappear after a reboot. Maybe someone could test that out. Hope it helps someone else that couldn't get the other suggestions to work for them. Good luck.
