Hello guys, I'm running into this issue...

I have a 32-bit Dell inspiron 1525. It came with Windows Vista but I upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate. It was working fine for a week or so. Then all of a sudden it appeared a red X in the system tray where the signal bars of the internet connection are and I had no internet (I'm not using ethernet connection, I'm using Wireless). Anyways, I turned the computer off, and used it again within two days and the red X disappeared and I was able to use the internet. BUT now I'm running into the same problem, the red X keeps showing in the system tray and I have no internet.

I tried ..
  • I reset the router
  • Update the network adapter driver
  • disable the network driver and enable it again
Please help me guys.

hi raac, and welcome to sevenforums,

sorry if i'm asking you really obvious questions, but we have to start somewhere.

i assume there's a keyboard key that switches wifi on and off? you aren't pressing it accidentally?

is there also some status led light that shows if wifi is on? is this lit while you're having problems?

I had a similar problem on a HP laptop. Turned out to be a faulty WiFi hardware piece. I bought a USB WiFi dongle and since then things work. If you do, I suggest to buy a dongle of the same make as your router. I first bought one of a different make and there were some little bugging problems too.

have you tried a system restore to the period that it worked fine, if you do then check what will be restored and what will be taken off.
when you put things back in that have been reset, do them one at a time to eliminate and identify a piece of software causing the problem

ok in start menu search system restore, click the result, restore computer from an earlier point.
when this opens up ,click open sys restore , find the date it was fine ,if it doesnt show check the show more restore points ,then click scan for affected programmes keep a note of what will be taken out ,so you can put them back in (one at a time ). close the scan for affected progs window then click next .follow the prompts from there, good luck.

its unlikely that a software is affecting things however its worth a try, often a system restore is my first attempt to fix things .

Ok, what is wrong with my machine?. I just turned it back on and the red X disappeared and the internet is working again This is the second time it fixes by itself, but I don't want it to keep doing that.
. What is going on?

Since it seems to work or not work immediately after boot, I would assume that some program interference is pretty unlikely. At boot the same programs are being started all the time. I still suspect an intermittent hardware problem.
