Red X on Internet Icon in the Taskbar

I can't fathom out this weird problem, on my Icon in the taskbar for Internet access It has a Red cross at the bottom right corner of the Icon, but my Internet connection works fine, so does my Home Network to my old XP machine and to my Smart TV and Blu Ray player, even to my Mobile phone.

Anybody know why it's got this red x on it please ?

Hi Atomic245,

The 'Red cross' Network icon in the 'system tray' indicates a connection that is not being used. Since your PC is connecting fine to the internet, it is likely that you have more than one 'Network connections' available for use. It is also likely that the system is connected to the internet either through 'Ethernet or Wireless'; and the other one is installed/disabled.

Please follow these steps to capture more information:

1. Click 'Start' and type 'ncpa.cpl' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' > Capture and share details

2. Click 'devmgmt.msc' (without quotations) in 'Search box' and tap 'Enter' (Device Manager Opens) > Locate and Expand 'Network Adapters' category > Capture details of all 'devices' that are listed underneath (Also check if any of these devices has a question mark/exclamation mark' besides it) > Also check 'Other Devices' category and share details of any device that is listed with a 'mark' besides it.

3. Open http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/947-command-prompt.html and type 'ipconfig /all' (without quotation) and tap 'Enter'. The window will display detailed information about the working of 'network connections' in the system.

Thank you for your quick reply. I have found the likely cause of the problem, I have the following entry in "Ipconfig /all: Tunnel adapter isatap .cable.virginmedia.net:
Media state: Media disconnected

Then a few more lines of address etc , then it says DHCP enabled: No

Could this be what is causing the Red X ? if so , how do I fix it.

I also have another weird issue that you could maybe help me with please, I have 3 computers connected to my router, all three have gigabit adapters in them, one has Win MCE Sp3 OS, one has XP Sp3 and one has Win 7 64 bit ultimate, the two XP machines show that they are only running at 100Mb/s on the Icon in the taskbar for Network connections, the Win 7 shows 1Gb..

I don't know why when they each have a separate port on my router that they should run at different speeds, any ideas ?

My set up, I have a Virgin media Super Hub running in Modem mode, connected to this is my D-link DIR 615 Rev D router, on port 1 is my Win 7 Machine
on port 2 is my XP Mce Machine
on port 3 is my TP link gigabit 8 port switch
on port 4 is my XP machine.

Your advice will be gratefully received.Thanks.

Edit: I only have one Network adapter installed on my systems.

Thank you for the response.

Please check 'Device Manager' to see if any device is listed with a 'bang/mark'.

In the mean while, you may try to 'disable' the tunnel adapters to see if that helps:
- Open an http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html
- Type 'netsh int isa set state disabled' (without quotations) > Tap 'Enter'
- Open 'Device Manager' > Click 'View' > Click 'Show hidden devices' > Expand 'Network Adapters' tree > Right click 'Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface' and select 'Disable' > Disable 'Teredo' > Right click '6to4 Adapter' and select 'Disable'

Check for Bluetooth and if you virtualize, for vmware or virtualbox networks too.
