ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

- In the search box type cmd.
- Right-click the cmd icon from the search results under Programs and select Run as administrator.

it worked then i restarted the laptop. it still appeared to be fixed so i restarted again and the issue has reappeared.

the blue icon is used to turn on/off wifi and bluetooth. i've had this laptop since 2012 and i have only recently started having this problem. so i don't think that is the cause.

Hi
IF the Bluetooth/wifi is active and DESIGNATED as the primary connection then that X will allways appear on the Ethernet connection - you CANNOT have both running at the same time.
note have you got an iphone/headset/xbox type controller sync active.
You can also reset the notification option for the Ethernet to not show
