Does anyone have a reference to what each item in the Advanced Window Color and Appearance controls? ie I read "message box" controls the browser menu font. Argh! who would guess that from "message box"?
XP had the same menu so I've had this question since 2001 :D

I always make my own color scheme, so I spend some time there when I first install an OS. The "Apply" button is to test each setting temporarily before hitting "OK."

Take your pick of guides here:

Hi
Me too :) I've spent hours and hours on it but its always been a hit and miss process. I have to choose weird fonts or colors so I can identify where it is showing up but sometimes it takes a while before I open the program or setting or whatever it is that it's affecting then I have to go back and look through each item to find the same font color.

I looked at the first two sites from the link but neither one has an explanation of each item :( I wonder if a Windows 7 for Dummies book would have it.

What does "a Window Item Setting" mean? something that is controlled by the windows operating system?

I use Tahoma #10 Bold in black for everything, with an assortment of pastel colors, easy to read. You don't need hours. You can choose a setting by pointing at it on the diagram, then the name appears underneath. Caption buttons and Selected Items aren't on the diagram. Caption buttons are the 3 buttons at the top right of every window.

Not sure what you mean by the name appearing underneath?
If you are talking about the name of the item, I don't know what a lot of the item names are referring to. For example what are "3D objects"?

How did you change the system font from Segoe to Tahoma?!

Click on the "OK" button in the picture, and "3-D Objects" will select itself in the list. They're buttons.
Click on the scrollbar in the picture, and "Scrollbar" will select itself in the list.
Most of the items in the picture are in the list. But "Icon spacing" refers to the desktop icons.

If you click on the Menu or Title Bars or other text items in the picture, there will be a drop-down
menu at the bottom to choose a font, font color and font size.

This stuff goes back to Win 95. There must be an explanation in one of the search results I sent.
