hello - my computer is a dell laptop Vostro13 with preloaded W7 32 bit. I regularly lose my connection to the workgroup while all 4 other computers do not. i have shortcuts direct to various machines that fail. i can sometimes restart the network by going into the my network places section and it can then connect to the other workgroup computers but sometimes a full reboot is required. this happens sometimes multiple times in a day - any advice? i have turned off the power save settings that shut down wifi, i am using built-in wifi connection like the other machines on my workgroup are. thanks.

Hello,

Click Start>Run. Type in 'ipconfig /all' and post the results in here.

What type of router/wireless access point are you using?

Does the connection drop off when you do a certain thing? For example connect another PC to the wireless?

TRENDnet TEW-651BR Wireless N 150 router

>Does the connection drop off when you do a certain thing? For example connect another PC to the wireless?

not your example, no. i can't think of anything that would cause me to lose connection with the other LAN users in the workgroup, i do not lose connection to the internet for example.

details below - please advise - thanks!

The Router (192.168.10.1) is giving out two DNS Addresses via DHCP, one internal and one external. Remove the external DNS Server (156.154.70.1) from the DHCP settings on the router and try agian. Leave the 192.168.10.1 address as a DNS Server.

Hope that makes sense.

hi dave

thanks for the help but the router is not the culprit. when i was in china i did a dns speed test from google which told me the fastest DNS server to use and i modified my config to that setting. now i have manually set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 (google) for inside USA. do you really think having modified the DNS server on my wifi properties could be related to me losing my connection to the workgroup LAN members shares? thanks.

Hi Brad,

You can leave the DNS Server on the router pointing to 156.154.70.1 if you wish but it does not want to be in as the primary DNS Server for your PCs. This is because it will use that server to do local lookups as well. Remove that address from your DHCP settings only.

hi dave
perhaps i was not clear in my previous response. there is no 156.?? number in my router at all. that number was entered in the wifi properties for IPv4 by me when i was in china for speed reasons, i have removed the setting for now and the DNS now reflects the router number, yet the problem persists. thanks

Ahhh ok, sorry Brad.

Can you right click Computer and select manage. In Computer Management there will be a link on the left for Device manager. In Device manager right click your network adaptor and click Update Driver Software.

the wizard reports driver is current one.

FYI i run 3 LAN's in 3 countries, all of which are called workgroup - this one is the only one that has this issue of forgetting the other workgroup members and their shares.

it could be an issue with the router, i have a habit of buying the cheapest router - but this may be in error. could the router have some stupid power save feature causing this issue? no idea.

thanks

Hi Brad,

Is file and printer sharing enabled on the other PC's on the network?

You said that "this one is the only one that has this issue of forgetting the other workgroup members and their shares." - Are you saying that you can see other shares that aren't there?

hi dave
file sharing is active on other PC's on my lan, plus the NAS device i use pogoplug. i access them normally as additional folders and this machine keeps disconnecting and the links stop working.

>You said that "this one is the only one that has this issue of forgetting the other workgroup members and their shares." - Are you saying that you can see other shares that aren't there?

no, i'm saying other PC's on the lan can see the other shares without fail, this is the only computer having this problem on this LAN.

I had this issue with my Lan adapter and it helped.

Hi there,

I am running windows 10 Home with a e2200 killer adapter and I found that it loses the loacal area network and I cannot see my network. Internet works fine. The below helped me and I would not advise to restore the OS, just setup and batch file to run the netsh command... hope it helps someone.

I also updated my drivers to the latest it became slightly more stable but every now and then I get the error one or more protocols are missing ......

Ifyou get “one or morenetwork protocols are missing from this computer” error while the Wi-Fi is not working or with theresult of “limited”. on Windows 8/10 tablet, computer, it might be a driverissue. You could try the following tips to fix it.
*Reinstall the TCP/IP protocol

From Start screen, search Command Prompt, select Run as Administrator
Type the Command and press the Enter key to execute it:

netsh int ip reset

Then restart the device to apply all changes.
* If you get the WiFi issue, go to re-install its driver

First download the driver for your WiFi online from another PC, use USB flashto move the files onto your desktop.
Open DeviceManager,go to NetworkAdapters,right-click your Wireless device (such as Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN),click “Removedriver software” button to uninstall it, and then click “OK”.

Then reboot the system and a wireless icon in your system tray should try to makethe reconnection. If it fails, install the files which you just copied.

* Oncethe above methods don’t take any effects, the only thing remaining to do isrestore the system to factory default setting
Within the charm bar of the Windows 8, click Settings > Change PC settings> General, under “Remove everything and reinstall Windows” option, click Get started.

ForWin 8.1, go to PC setting > Update and recovery, and select “Removeeverything and reinstall Windows”.
